Hatfield, MA — For the week ending 11/6/2016, Vassar’s Isabelle Bertram and Bard’s Abe Etkin have been named the women’s and men’s [hpow].

A [hpow] should have a significant impact on his or her team’s performance during the prior week and demonstrate sportsmanship. Coaches and Sports Information Directors may nominate players.

Isabelle Bertram (Vassar College): The 2016 – 2017 season got off to a strong start for Vassar. Last season, the Brewers lost three matches to Mount Holyoke. Isabelle Bertram, a senior tri-captain, faced Mount Holyoke’s Lessley Portillo at the #3 position. After losing the first two games, Bertram battled back to take game three in extra points, before she won the final two games (8-11, 9-11, 14-12, 11-4, and 13-11). Bertram’s victory helped 29th-ranked Vassar defeat the 27th-ranked Lyons, 7-2, for the first time since the 2005 – 2006 season.

Abe Etkin (Bard College): Bard opened the season 2-0 with victories over Brandeis and Northeastern. Against Northeastern, #4 Abe Etkin was the top victor on the Raptors’ ladder. He defeated William Greaves-Tunnell in three games (11-5, 11-6, and 11-7). Etkin, Bard’s senior captain, also defeated Brandeis’ Tiger Lu in four games (11-6, 8-11, 11-4, and 11-5). Last season, the Raptors captured a program record 11 matches. It appears Etkin is keen on leading the Raptors towards surpassing that record.
