Hatfield, MA — The majority of matches this week were held at round robin events in Connecticut, Maryland, and New York.
On Wednesday, George Washington hosted Georgetown. Both Colonial squads defeated Georgetown.
Continuing a Boston rivalry, MIT shutout Boston University on Thursday.
On Saturday, Mount Holyoke visited its neighbor Smith. The Lyons defeated Smith, 9-0, but lost to Northeastern, 5-4.
In Boston, MIT shutout Lehigh and Bryant.
On Sunday, the George Washington women defeated Johns Hopkins, 9-0.
Bard hosted a round robin event over the weekend featuring Colgate, Lafayette, Swarthmore, Siena, and Vassar. Boston University was scheduled to compete, but withdrew on Friday afternoon. The Men’s Executive Committee will now review the circumstances of Boston University’s late withdrawal, in accordance with the CSA’s updated rules for the 2016-2017 season: “If a team cancels a match less than two weeks prior to the scheduled match date, their eligibility for the National Team Championship will be reviewed by the Executive Committee. Unless extraordinary circumstances make the cancelation absolutely necessary, the team will be deemed ineligible for the National Team Championship.” On Saturday, host Bard defeated Colgate, 6-3, and Lafayette, 9-0. Vassar defeated Lafayette, 7-2, and Swarthmore, 6-3. Bard concluded their round robin on Sunday with wins over Swartmore and Siena. Bard will enter December with a 6-0 record, the program’s best start in history.
Colgate hosted Rochester, Vassar, and William Smith in upstate New York. William Smith shutout all three of their opponents. The Herons are 5-0 on the season. Vassar also shutout Colgate.
Navy hosted its first round robin of the season. The Midshipmen opened play on Friday night with a shutout of Fordham. On Saturday, Navy defeated Dickinson, 9-0. Navy and Virginia had quite the match, with 3 matches going to 5 games and three matches going to 4 games. Navy escaped with a 5-4 victory over the Cavaliers. The Haverford men defeated Washington, 6-3, and Richmond, 8-1, at the round robin on Saturday. The Haverford women shutout Johns Hopkins. Dickinson lost to both Virginia squads. Fordham lost to Johns Hopkins, 4-5, and Washington, 1-7. On Sunday, Navy defeated Washington and Johns Hopkins.
The Ivy League Scrimmages, a preseason event at Yale, were held this weekend. In the unofficial action, Harvard defeated Penn, 5-4, in the women’s final, while Harvard defeated Columbia, 6-3, to win the men’s tournament.
In men’s club-vs.-club team action, USC defeated Notre Dame and Minnesota. Washington defeated Richmond.
In women’s club-vs.-club team matches, Virginia defeated Johns Hopkins. Rochester and Colgate defeated Bard.
Schools are reminded that to qualify for the National Team Championships, a minimum number of matches must be played at specific periods of the season:
- Varsity teams are required to play ten (10) matches against other CSA teams to enter team championships. At minimum, each team should have at least 6 different opponents. Varsity teams should play the majority of their matches against other varsity schools.
- Club teams are required to play eight (8) matches against other CSA teams to enter team championships. At minimum, each team should have at least five (5) different opponents.
For a regular season match to officially count for ranking purposes, each team must have at least seven players. Matches with less than seven players per team will not count towards the required number of matches for entry into the National Team Championships.
