Around the Courts: College Squash Highlights (1/10/2016)

College Squash AssociationHatfield, MA — The second half of the 2015 – 2016 college squash season has commenced.

The top-ranked Trinity men opened play with a swing through the Mid-Atlantic states. On Tuesday, the Bantams visited and shutout Drexel. The next day, Navy hosted Trinity. The Midshipmen fell, 1-8. To conclude the trip on Thursday, Trinity stopped by George Washington and defeated the Colonials, 9-0.

Also on Thursday, Williams hosted NESCAC rival Hamilton. The Ephs shutout both Hamilton squads.

Friday began the Maine Round Robin hosted by Bates, Bowdoin, and Colby.  MIddlebury defeated the Bates men, 5-4, and the Bobcat women, 6-3. Bowdoin edged the St. Lawrence women, 5-4. The 2nd-ranked St. Lawrence men blanked the Polar Bears.

Play continued in Maine on Saturday. The 17th-ranked Bates men earned a 6-3 victory over 14th-ranked Williams. The Ephs’ women defeated Bates, 6-3. Bowdoin lost to Middlebury 0-9 in the men’s match and 1-8 in the women’s match. The Panthers also gained victories over both Colby squads. St. Lawrence defeated the Colby men, 9-0, but fell to the Mules’ women, 2-7.

Ivy League play resumed on Saturday. Princeton travelled to New Hampshire to visit Dartmouth. The Tigers’ women shutout their hosts. The Dartmouth men continued their impressive season. The Big Green earned an 8-1 victory, their first victory over the Tigers since the 1955 – 1956 season.

Harvard hosted Penn. The top-ranked Harvard women defeated 2nd-ranked Penn, 6-3. The 8th-ranked Harvard men recorded their first victory of the season with a 6-3 win over the 2nd-ranked Quakers. The Crimson captured two of the three five-game matches as they defended their home courts.

Brown hosted Columbia. Both Bears’ squads lost, 2-7. Yale defeated the Cornell women, 9-0, and the Cornell men, 8-1.

Hamilton visited New London, CT. The Continentals earned victories over both Conn College teams.

On Sunday, the final day of the Maine Round Robin was played. Bates and St. Lawrence traded 7-2 matches. The Bobcat women earned the victory over St. Lawrence, while the Saints’ men won the bottom seven ladder positions to claim their match. Williams played both Colby and Bowdoin. Against Colby, the Ephs’ men won 7-2, while in the women’s match they won 9-0. After driving to Bowdoin, Williams defeated both Polar Bear squads.

In Ivy League match ups, Dartmouth hosted Penn. The Quaker women shutout Dartmouth. The Big Green lost a tightly contested match, 4-5, to Penn. Harvard hosted and shutout both Princeton squads. The 6th-ranked Yale men earned a 7-2 victory over the 5th-ranked Columbia. The Bulldog women also defeated the Lions, 8-1. Cornell concluded their road trip with wins over Brown. The Big Red earned an 8-1 win in the men’s match and a 7-2 win in the women’s match.

Coaches and Team Contacts, please remember to enter your team’s results in the US Squash Scoring System on the day of each match. Each player must be named in the results (“Not on Roster” entries will not be tolerated) or penalties may be applied.

Schools are reminded that to qualify for the National Team Championships, a minimum number of matches must be played at specific periods of the season:

  • Varsity teams are required to play ten (10) matches against other CSA teams to enter team championships. At minimum, each team should have at least 6 different opponents. Varsity teams should play the majority of their matches against other varsity schools.
  • Club teams are required to play eight (8) matches against other CSA teams to enter team championships. In addition, club teams must play at least four (4) matches between January 1st and February 10th. At minimum, each team should have at least five (5) different opponents.

For a regular season match to officially count for ranking purposes, each team must have at least seven players. Except for Emerging Teams, matches with less than seven players per team will not count towards the required number of matches for entry into the National Team Championships.
