Northampton, MA — It was a busy week for college squash, with important match-ups and round robin events.
On Tuesday, Drexel hosted city rival Penn. The Penn men defeated Drexel 6-3, while the Penn women shut out the Dragons. Also on Tuesday, the Tufts men and women each defeated Boston College, 8-1. Wellesley visited and defeated Conn College, 7-2.
Connecticut was the site of matches on Wednesday. Trinity hosted Yale. The Trinity women defeated the Bulldogs, 7-2, while the Trinity men also defeated Yale, 8-1. Both Wesleyan squads hosted and shut out Conn College.
Friday saw Brown host Colby. The Brown men edged the Mules, 5-4, while the Brown women shut out Colby. In upstate New York, St. Lawrence travelled to Cornell. The teams traded matches with the St. Lawrence men winning, 8-1, and the Cornell women winning, 9-0. The Drexel women visited and shut out William Smith.
On Saturday, Cornell hosted Drexel. The Big Red defeated the Dragons, 7-2, in each match. St. Lawrence hosted and defeated both Tufts squads. The St. Lawrence men also shutout Western Ontario, while Western Ontario defeated the Tufts men. The Haverford men and women each earned 8-1 victories over Vassar.
The top-ranked Trinity men visited 5th-ranked Rochester on Saturday. Tied at 4-4, Rochester secured the final match and upset the Bantams, 5-4. Brown defeated the Bowdoin men and women. Yale visited and defeated both George Washington squads, 8-1. The Williams women shut out Mount Holyoke.
In Massachussetts on Saturday, the Northeastern women lost to Boston College, 1-8, and defeated Colgate, 6-3.
On Sunday, Bowdoin hosted Colby. The teams traded matches with the Colby men winning 5-4, while the Bowdoin women prevailed 5-4. Trinity’s New York road trip continued. The Bantams defeated both Cornell squads. The George Washington women hosted and defeated Columbia, 5-4. The Columbia men beat George Washington, 8-1. Rochester completed its weekend by defeating Drexel, 8-1. Dartmouth defeated both Bates squads, 7-2.
There were four round robin events this weekend. In Vermont, Middlebury hosted several schools, including Bates, Conn College, Hamilton, Franklin & Marshall, and Wellesley. On Friday, both Panther squads shutout Conn College. The Middlebury women also defeated Wellesley, 9-0. On Saturday, Middlebury continued its success, this time against Bates. The 16th-ranked Middlebury women defeated 15th-ranked Bates, 8-1, while the 19th-ranked Middlebury men earned a 6-3 win over the Bobcats. Franklin & Marshall also earned victories over both of Bates’ and Conn College’s squads. For the second weekend in a row, Hamilton defeated Conn College. The Hamilton women defeated Wellesley.
In the Midwest, the Northwestern men defeated Chicago, 8-1, while Washington in St. Louis shut out the Notre Dame men. Northwestern beat Vanderbilt.
At Wesleyan University in Connecticut, Hobart earned victories against MIT (7-2), Boston University (9-0), and Conn College (6-3). Colby and Wesleyan traded matches. The Colby women won, 6-3, while the Wesleyan men won, 5-4. The Wesleyan women defeated Boston University, 9-0. The Wesleyan men also defeated Bryant, Hobart, and MIT. Denison lost to Wesleyan and MIT.
The University of Virginia hosted a number of squads over the weekend. In women’s play, Dickinson earned a victory against Fordham and lost 4-5 to both Georgetown and Johns Hopkins. Johns Hopkins lost to Georgetown, 4-5. Fordham was victorious over Notre Dame. Hosts Virginia defeated Bucknell, Fordham, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, and Notre Dame. Notre Dame also lost to Bucknell and Georgetown, while Georgetown defeated Bucknell.
In men’s play, Fordham earned victories over Charleston (6-3), Richmond (7-2), and Dickinson (9-0), but lost to Georgetown (3-6). Charleston lost to both Richmond and Bucknell, and Buckell defeated Georgetown, 5-4. Richmond earned an 8-1 victory over Dickinson. UVA defeated Bucknell, Charleston, Dickinson, Fordham, and Georgetown.
Coaches and Team Contacts, please remember to enter your team’s results in the US Squash Scoring System on the day of each match. Each player must be named in the results (“Not on Roster” entries will not be tolerated) or penalties may be applied.
Schools are reminded that to qualify for the National Team Championships, a minimum number of matches must be played at specific periods of the season:
- Varsity teams are required to play ten (10) matches against other CSA teams to enter team championships. At minimum, each team should have at least 6 different opponents. Varsity teams should play the majority of their matches against other varsity schools.
- Club teams are required to play eight (8) matches against other CSA teams to enter team championships. In addition, club teams must play at least four (4) matches between January 1st and February 10th. At minimum, each team should have at least five (5) different opponents.
For a regular season match to officially count for ranking purposes, each team must have at least seven players. Except for Emerging Teams, matches with less than seven players per team will not count towards the required number of matches for entry into the National Team Championships.
