2012 Men’s College Squash National Team Championships: Day 2 Morning Report

Princeton, NJ and Philadelphia, PA — The morning featured a number of close matches, with play mostly in the consolation brackets.

Potter Cup (A Division): A Division play, which is taking place at Princeton, is mostly scheduled for the afternoon, though the Princeton-Cornell match began in the late morning and is currently underway.

Hoehn Cup (B Division): Middlebury and Bates had their third match in as many weeks, as they met in the consolations of the B Division. Middlebury had won their last two meetings by a score of 6-3; the Panthers maintained the pattern, securing another 6-3 victory today.  The Naval Academy, seeded eleventh coming into the tournament, took on Brown, the fourteenth seed. Navy won 8-1, but the match was quite competitive, with several individual matches going past three games and multiple games going into extra points.

Summers Cup (C Division): Play began at 9:00 am at the Lawrenceville School with two consolation matches: Stanford versus Connecticut College and Wesleyan versus Amherst. Conn and Amherst will play in the consolation finals thanks to the Camels’ 7-2 win over Stanford and the Jeffs’ 6-3 win over Wesleyan. The Cardinal (Stanford) and the Cardinals (Wesleyan) will play for the seventh and eighth spots in the division tomorrow.

Conroy Cup (D Division): Drexel notched their first win at the Men’s National Team Championships as a varsity program with an 8-1 victory over MIT. Drexel advances to the consolation finals, where they will face the winner of the Johns Hopkins-Colgate match, which was scheduled for noon.

Chaffee Cup (E Division): Play in the Chaffee Cup was scheduled to start at 10:30 am at the University of Pennsylvania. In the main draw, BC faced Cal Berkeley. Vassar and Kenyon played in one consolation semifinal, and  the other semifinal featured the battle of the Washingtons: the University of Washington and Washington University in St. Louis. Results were not available as of publication.

Serues Cup (F Division): F Division play, which is taking place at Penn, is all scheduled for the afternoon.

Hawthorn Cup (G Division):  The Hawthorn Cup is the largest bracket at the 2012 Men’s National Team Championships. The morning got off to an exciting start with two 5-4 matches in the main draw. NYU advanced into the semifinals with a 5-4 win over Notre Dame. NYU will face Boston University later today; the Terriers advanced with a 5-4 win of their own over Northwestern. Two teams representing schools from the South — Charleston and Sewanee  — were scheduled to play in the late morning in the other main draw semifinal. In round robin play, USC defeated Illinois Springfield 6-3 and Vermont beat Ithaca 5-4.

Emerging Teams Division: Minnesota had an exciting debut at the Men’s National Team Championships, coming within a match of taking their first team contest at the event. Maryland proved too strong, however, and took the match 3-2.
