Northampton, MA — For the week ending 1/22/2012, Brown’s Erika Kohnen and Yale’s John Roberts have been named the women’s and men’s [hpow].
A Harrow Sports College Squash Player of the Week should have a significant impact on his or her team’s performance during the prior week and demonstrate sportsmanship. Coaches and Sports Information Directors may nominate players by contacting Michael T. Bello. Nominations are due each Monday by 6 PM ET.
There were a number of deserving candidates this week, including Conn’s Allie Hibbs, who went 3-1 at the Pioneer Valley Invitational, including a five-game win against Tufts. Yale’s Robert Berner and Ryan Dowd helped lead their team to an exciting 5-4 victory against top-ranked Trinity College.
Erika Kohnen (Brown University): Kohnen went 2-0 this week with victories over Amherst and Williams. The senior captain’s tight three-game win (12-10, 11-7, and 11-9) against Williams’ Carolyn Kaemmer helped lead the 11th-ranked Bears to a 6-3 win over the Ephs. According to assistant coach Pete Avitable, Kohnen’s match was the “turning point in the match with Williams.”
John Roberts (Yale University): Roberts had the weight of the squash world on his shoulders last Wednesday. With Yale and Trinity tied at 4-4, he faced Trinity’s Johan Detter in the final match. Trinity had not lost a match since 1998. The #4 pulled ahead 2-1, but lost the fourth game. In front of a packed house, he won the fifth and final game (10-12, 11-7, 11-7, 5-11, and 11-4) to give Yale the victory.
