Stanford, CA — Stanford will make three trips east this season, and with limited opportunities to play on the West Coast, they’ll have to make every match count.
A 6-3 win over Denison in the first consolation round of the Summers Cup (C Division) at the Men’s National Team Championships made Stanford the top club team in the nation. Aside from a trip to the D Division in 2008-2009, the Cardinal have competed for the Summers Cup in each of the last ten seasons. The team’s goal for this year is to stay in the C Division.
Stanford will open their season by taking on two of the teams they faced at championships: Denison and Hamilton, a team they lost to 4-5 during the consolation finals. Stanford will host several teams traveling to the West Coast in early January and will have a busy weekend at the Yale Round Robin at the end of that month. Making the most of the trip, they’ll take on Conn, Bowdoin, GW, Northeastern, and Colby all in one full weekend.
The team will need to adjust to the loss of five players. Vini Shetty, Alejandro Ortega, and 2009-2010 captains Pat Bugas and Ananth Sridhar have graduated, and Miles Bennett is on a Mormon mission. Brunswick Academy grad Chris Baldock, who was ranked 21st BU19 last season, should fill in one of the spots left by Bugas and Shetty in the top 3. Horace Mann’s Tyler Strand likewise should help fill the gaps left by Bennett and Sridhar in the middle of the line-up. Trent Hazy will join returning tri-captain Sam Gould to lead the team.
