Amherst: 2010 – 2011 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

Amherst, MA — After finishing last season ranked 18th in the nation, the Jeffs have a lofty goal: to reach the top 10. That kind of movement inside the top 20 is not unprecedented, but it’s certainly not common, and with a number of teams ahead of them adding depth, the Jeffs will have their work cut out for themselves.

However, there are a number of things in Amherst’s favor. The team only lost two seniors from their championship roster to graduation, and they played at the bottom of the ladder. In addition to returning their top eight players from last season, the Jeffs will only grow deeper thanks to their first-year players. John Kerr, who was ranked 27th BU19, will join the team, as will Rodrigo Miranda, a top junior player from El Salvador. Christopher Gerry of Long Island will also be added to the Jeffs’ roster.

Without a doubt, Amherst will be stronger this season. In January they’ll face several NESCAC schools, including defending C Division champion Middlebury and Bates, who finished 12th in the nation last season. Both squads beat Amherst last year; Bates won their one meeting decisively, while Middlebury prevailed in three very close contests across the season. If the Jeffs can hold off the other NESCAC teams, they’ll be in position to move up in the rankings.
