Tufts: 2010 – 2011 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

Medford, MA — Facing a rebuilding season, the Jumbos look to minimize their losses and stay in the C Division.

Since the 2004-2005 season, Tufts has consistently finished in the top 20. Keeping that streak alive this season may prove challenging. Between graduation and study abroad, the Jumbos have lost six players from their championship roster.

However, Tufts does have a number of first-year players coming in and that should help fill in the holes in their ladder, especially in the bottom half. Also, two upperclassmen — Ed Wronsky, a sophomore, and Luke Metcalf, a junior — have also joined. A number of returning players are likely to play up on the ladder, so they will have to draw on their experience as the new members adjust to the collegiate game.

Senior Alex Gross, a First-Team All-NESCAC selection last season, will be leading the Jumbos on and off the court. Gross is expected to play number 1 again and will be the team’s captain.

Tufts players have volunteered with SquashBusters, Boston’s urban youth squash program, in the past, and the team will likely continue its involvement this year.

“It’s the first re-building season in about 12 years,” says head coach Doug Eng. “We have a team with 7 upperclassmen and 6 freshmen so we are looking forward to a learning season for the new players and the upperclassmen to pass on their experience and knowledge. We look forward to a hard-working team effort to stay in the top 24 nationally.”
