Haverford: 2010 – 2011 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

Haverford, PA — Haverford finished 2009-2010 with a 4 and 11 record, but those numbers belie the competitiveness of the Fords’ season. Four of their losses were by one-match margins, and two others came within two matches for the win. With a few adjustments, the Fords could be real contenders for the Chaffee Cup.

They’ve already proved they can turn around 4-5 losses. At the Men’s National Team Championships, Haverford reversed a loss to Vassar from earlier in the season. They’ll get a chance to prove themselves against the Brewers again in early November when they host both Vassar and George Washington.

Former Bowdoin standout Niki Clement will be tasked with helping the Fords close in on other E Division teams. Clement succeeds Damon Leedale-Brown as head coach.

Clement will be working with a team that returns eight of its top ten players. Zef Konst, who tied Chris Tyson for the most wins — nine — last season, will be back as captain. He’ll be joined by fellow junior Alex Spiliotes, who went undefeated at championships last season.

The squad is young and motivated, with new leadership. As the players gain more experience and Clement settles into her new position, perhaps the Fords will be able to convert some of those close losses into wins this season.
