Lehigh: 2010 – 2011 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

Bethlehem, PA — Lehigh is one of the newest teams to join the College Squash Association. The Mountain Hawks weren’t able to compete in the Men’s National Team Championships, but they fielded a nine-player team and played an eight-match schedule, finishing the season with a .500 record.

In fact, the Mountain Hawks opened last season with a three-match winning streak, defeating a varsity team — Bard — in a competitive 6-3 match. Their third win of the season, against Swarthmore, came down to tie-breakers. Neither team had nine players, and each squad won four matches, so it came down to points, with Lehigh winning 230 to Swarthmore’s 220. In November they defeated eventual Hawthorn Cup (G Division) champion Lafayette 6-3, though they lost a January rematch 2-7 playing short-handed. All in all, Lehigh played enough matches to be ranked 55th in the nation at the end of the season.

All but two of the players from last year’s team will be back, and three new players will join the team: Andrew Stewart, Chang Liu, and Nigel Corea.  The team has plans for a fundraiser giving students the opportunity to play squash, and they will also be traveling to compete at Navy.

With a strong foundation and a successful first year of competitive squash behind them, the Mountain Hawks should only continue to improve.
