Washington, DC — Maura Myers has ended her term as the head coach of George Washington’s women’s squash team after six years. She is leaving the Washington, D.C. area to pursue other opportunities.
Myers came to GW as the the Colonials were transitioning from club to varsity status. Under Myers’s leadership, the team steadily moved up the national rankings. The team finished 27th in her first year of coaching but soon moved up a division into the Walker Cup (C Division) at the Women’s National Team Championships (Howe Cup). Between the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 seasons, the Colonials moved from 22nd to 15th, a record finish for the program.
In 2008, Myers was presented with the Chaffee Award, which is given annually to a coach whose team has demonstrated the qualities of sportsmanship, teamwork, character, and improvement.
This season, Myers guided the Colonials to a 9-4 finish. Seeded 20th coming into the National Team Championships, George Washington made it to the Walker Cup finals, where they prevailed over a tough Vassar squad in a tight 5-4 match.
After the Walker Cup win, Myers told GWSports.com, “We are thrilled to have ended the season on such a high note.” The same could be said for Myers: While the Colonials will surely miss their coach, she is leaving George Washington on a high note of her own.
