Stanford: 2009 – 2010 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

stanfordStanford, CA — The Stanford men ended last season with a strong performance at the National Team Championships. The Cardinal won close matches over Georgetown and Hobart to make it into the Conroy Cup finals against Connecticut College. Conn eventually took the D Division title 5-4, but Stanford did not go down easily. With the top six players from last year’s squad returning, 2009-2010 looks to be a promising season for Stanford.

Junior Sam Gould, who played number 1 for the Cardinal last season, and CSA Scholar-Athletes Pat Bugas and Ananth Sridhar will captain the team. Sophomores Derek Rowley, Wyant Hong, and Teddy Bowers, all top-six players, will be back, as will Spencer King and Greg Hertz, who both played at the bottom of the ladder.

The team has lost to graduation two players, Will Lewis and Dave Israelachvilli, who played in the bottom three. The team will gain three players who are expected to play in the middle or bottom of the ladder: juniors Ned Henningson and Trent Hazy, and first-year player Miles Bennett.

Last year’s team also set a high academic standard. “If GPA counted on court, I think our team would win the A Division!” says head coach Mark Talbott. Stanford would definitely be a contender. With four players earning academic honors from the CSA last year — Bugas, Israelachvilli, Lewis, and Sridhar — the Cardinal tied Columbia, Harvard, Haverford, Vassar, and Williams for most men’s CSA Scholar Athletes.
