Stanford: 2009 – 2010 Women’s College Squash Season Preview

stanfordStanford, CA — It’s hard to believe that less than ten years ago, Stanford, then a newly formed club team, finished last in the nation. After finishing 7th last year, the Cardinal hopes to become a fixture in the A Division.

Yale and Cornell, the teams that finished fifth and sixth last year, will be key matches for Stanford. The Cardinal will be without Lily Lorentzen, the former national individual champion who played number 1 for the team and graduated last year. The rest of the squad will be returning, however, and senior Katy Brewster, who has played both number 1 and 2 for Stanford, will be captain.

The returning players have set a high standard for the four incoming players, both on the court and in the classroom. Pamela Chua and Kerrie Sample will join Brewster at the top of the ladder, while Julie Koenig and Sommer Carroll should play in the bottom 3.

Head coach Mark Talbott reports, “The courts continue to get busier and squash is expanding in the Bay area.” Stanford has contributed to that growth by running Xtreme Squash, an urban squash and education program. The Stanford women’s success should help continue that growth as well.
