Men’s Match of the Week: Quaker Prevail over Bulldogs

In a highly anticipated clash between the nation’s top two men’s squash teams, the #1-ranked University of Pennsylvania Quakers secured an impressive 8-1 victory over the #2-ranked Yale Bulldogs on Sunday, January 12, in Philadelphia. Both teams entered the match after challenging Saturday fixtures, adding intrigue to this marquee showdown.

The match kicked off with contests at the #1, #5, and #7 positions, where Penn established early momentum. Nathan Kueh opened the scoring for the Quakers with a strong four-game victory at #5, followed by a commanding four-game win from top player Salman Khalil at #1. Yale responded through Rishi Srivastava, who delivered a hard-fought four-game win at #7, keeping the Bulldogs within reach as the first round ended with Penn holding a 2-1 advantage.

In the second round, the Quakers took full control, winning all three matches to seal the overall victory. Abdelrahman Dweek breezed through his match at #8 with a straight-game win, while Dana Santry battled his way to a crucial four-game triumph at #6. The turning point came at the #3 position, where Omar Hafez showcased exceptional mental toughness in a grueling five-game battle to clinch the match for Penn.

Despite the final result being decided, the Quakers continued their momentum in the last round. Wins by Nicholas Spizzirri at #2, Marwan Abdelsalam at #4, and Varun Chitturi at #9 added to the tally, resulting in an 8-1 scoreline. However, the match was far closer than the numbers suggest, with numerous games decided by narrow margins and intense exchanges.

Penn Head Coach Gilly Lane expressed pride in his team’s performance and resilience, noting the importance of the weekend as a benchmark for the program. “We are extremely thrilled to come out on top against a tough Yale team. The scoreline doesn’t reflect how tight the match actually was, and we are very happy with our performance,” Lane said. “Omar Hafez was outstanding this entire weekend after having to deal with the passing of his father the week before. His tenacity, toughness, and mental strength carried our team. It was truly incredible to see. Salman Khalil, Dana Santry, and Nathan Kueh all had key victories in the win. We are looking forward to the rest of the season.”

Lane also acknowledged the significance of competing in the CSA Match of the Week and the challenges posed by their opponents. “It is great to be highlighted in the CSA Match of the Week, and we knew this weekend would be huge for us in seeing where we are as a program. Trinity and Yale are both teams that can win the national championship, so we had to be ready from the start.”

With this victory, Penn solidifies its position as the team to beat, while Yale demonstrated its mettle and remains a formidable contender for the national title. The intensity of this Ivy League rivalry showcased the best of college squash and set the stage for a thrilling second half of the season.
