Week Four Recap: November 30 to December 7

Drexel’s Moa Bonnemark (left) and Columbia’s Elizabeth Lentz (right) fought in an exciting 5 game deciding battle this past weekend. Bonnemark secured the win for Drexel defeating Columbia 5-4.

It was a busy week on the courts with lots of close matches and several upsets in the CSA.

Varsity Teams

  • No. 22 Bates beat No. 21 Bowdoin in the CSA Men’s Match of the Week on Wednesday night at Bowdoin. While Bowdoin took the top 3 matches, Bates’ strength at the bottom of the ladder secured wins at 4,5,6,7,8 and 9 positions. The 6-3 victory leaves Bates men with a 4-1 record heading into the break. 
  • The CSA Women’s Match of the Week between No. 28 Haverford and No. 27 Denison was unfortunately canceled. 
  • Harvard’s women’s team reached a major milestone on Wednesday, earning their 100th straight dual match victory against league foe Dartmouth. The streak dates back to January 12, 2015 and was immediately extended to 101 straight wins with a victory over Virginia on Friday evening.
  • The Georgetown women had a big weekend of matches with 2 upsets to close out the 2022 calendar year. On Friday evening the No. 22 Hoyas swept No. 19 Bates’s bottom of the ladder and took home the 5-4 win. Georgetown continued their momentum on Saturday and upset No. 18 Colby in another 5-4 victory. The Georgetown women sit at 7-1 heading into the break. 
  • Drexel Women remain strong at No. 3 defeating both Columbia and Yale in close 5-4 battles. The Dragons were able to hold off No. 8 Columbia and make program history for a first ever win against No. 5 Yale. 
  • No. 13 Chatham men upset No. 11 Rochester on the road this weekend. The Cougars’ strength at the bottom of the ladder secured wins at the 6,7,8 and 9 positions. While Rochester’s top of the ladder dominated the match, Chatham was able to lock in a 5-4 win. 
  • No. 22 Bates men defeated No. 15 F&M at home this weekend. The Bobcats swept the bottom and top of the ladder and upset F&M 7-2. The men continued this momentum in CSA Men’s Match of the Week against No. 21 Bowdoin with a 6-3 win.
  • F&M women came to play this weekend with big upsets against Colby and Bates. The No. 21 Diplomats traveled to Maine to take on No. 18 Colby where they dominated the middle of the ladder and took the 5-4 victory. After a tough loss to No. 16 Bowdoin on Saturday evening, the Diplomats came back on Sunday to defeat No. 19 Bates in a 6-3 battle.
  • No. 17 MIT upset No. 14 Williams on Sunday at home. The MIT men played several close matches throughout the ladder but the bottom and top secured wins taking home the 6-3 victory. 

Club Teams

  • The University of Virginia Club hosted several teams this weekend at the McArthur Squash Center where several close 5-4 matches took place. 
  • The Jesters sponsored a round robin in Boston for many Women and Men/Co-Ed Club teams:
    • Men’s &Co-Ed Club: Penn Club defeated Boston University, Northeastern University, and Harvard University in 3 tough 5-4 matches. The Penn Club team continues their 8-0 undefeated season.
    • Women’s Club: Northeastern University, Boston University, Washington University in St. Louis and Boston College all competed in several successful matches.

The U.S. Jesters Club, founded in 1935, is a national social and philanthropic organization. For more than a dozen years, the Jesters have supported intercollegiate club squash.  The goals are to help undergraduates learn or accelerate their squash, enabling them to become lifelong players and members of the squash community; and to sustain collegiate squash by organizing memorable round-robin events that enable teams to enter the nationals.
