For the second season in a row, the 2022 Chatham University men’s squash program has been honored with the College Squash Association’s (CSA) Barnaby Award as the most improved men’s team. The Barnaby Award, voted on by the CSA men’s varsity coaches, recognizes the team that has improved the most since the end of the previous season in both its final team ranking and the quality of the opponents it has surpassed.

After jumping 36 positions by the end of the 2020 season, Chatham continued it’s upward trajectory under new head coach Chris Fernandez’s guidance. The Cougars moved up an additional 14 positions by the end of this season – from 28 to 14 – which once again represents the largest improvement in ranking of any varsity men’s team in the CSA.

Chatham’s overall record for the 2021-2022 season was 10-6, which included matches against some of the nation’s best teams and victories over historically successful programs like Franklin & Marshall College and St. Lawrence University. The Cougars competed in the Hoehn (B) Division at the CSA National Collegiate Team Championships, earning their first ever Hoehn Cup victory, but ultimately finishing sixth in that grouping.

The Barnaby Award was first presented in 1983. The 2022 Barnaby Award is Chatham University’s second most improved team award in program history.
