With five conference championship titles up for grabs this weekend, the College Squash Association (CSA) shared its latest rankings update on Thursday. Several factors contributed to a limited schedule over the past week, and the majority of the matches that remained played out true to form.
This is the first set of rankings that are based predominantly on the ELO ranking algorithm that CSA has used for the last several years. The algorithm creates a web of interconnected results that have been played up to this point in the season.
Normally, the web would be complete once all of the matches in a season. This season, however, with a relatively high number of missing data points (i.e. unplayed matches) the rankings this year will require a couple of slight adjustments where data is missing.
The biggest mover of the week was the Naval Academy, whose upsets of Franklin & Marshall and Dickinson propelled them to No. 23. Franklin & Marshall’s wins over St. Lawrence and MIT earlier in the season kept them in the same area of the rankings while Dickinson fell behind Navy.
For the women, Dartmouth took the victory over Amherst in the rescheduled match between the two schools on Tuesday, which caused them to flip-flop in the rankings. The match between No. 8 Cornell and No. 9 Penn, which had to be rescheduled to this coming Sunday due to the snowstorm, will go a long way toward deciding the Ramsay Cup draw for the National Collegiate Women’s Team Championships.
