Harrow Sports College Squash Player of the Week (2/5/2017)

Hatfield, MA — For the week ending 2/5/2017, Conn College’s Mawa Ballo and St. Lawrence’s Mohamed El Gawarhy  have been named the women’s and men’s [hpow].

A [hpow] should have a significant impact on his or her team’s performance during the prior week and demonstrate sportsmanship. Coaches and Sports Information Directors may nominate players.

Mawa Ballo (Connecticut College): The 29th-ranked Conn College Camels visited the 26th-ranked Wellesley last Wednesday. At the the match at the #1 position, Conn College junior Mawa Ballo faced Wellesley’s Meera Nayar. After falling behind 0-2 in games, Ballo won the 3rd game, 12-10, before capturing the final two games for the individual victory (7-11, 7-11, 12-10, 11-2, and 11-9). The win helped the Camels earn a 5-4 team victory.

Mohamed El Gawarhy (St. Lawrence University): At the Liberty League Championships, fierce rivals St. Lawrence, ranked 7th in the nation, and Rochester, ranked 4th, met in the Saturday evening match. St. Lawrence came from behind to tie the match at 4-4. The match at the #1 position featured St. Lawrence’s Mohamed El Gawarhy and Rochester’s Mario Yanez. Trailing 1-2 in games, El Gawarhy won the final two games to capture the individual (11-9, 6-11, 8-11, 11-7, and 11-2) and team match for the Saints. This marked St. Lawrence’s 4th straight Liberty League title.
