Hatfield, MA — In the final weekend of play prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, there were many upsets.
The week opened with three matches on Tuesday. In Boston, Wellesley defeated Boston College, 8-1. In Lancaster, PA, Franklin & Marshall hosted Drexel. The 9th-ranked Drexel men defeated the 13th-ranked Diplomats, 9-0; however, 14th-ranked Franklin & Marshall women soundly defeated the 10th-ranked Dragons.
The Drexel men were back in action on Wednesday. Navy travelled and fell to the Dragons, 2-7.
In Massachusetts on Friday, the Bates women visited Mount Holyoke. The Bobcats shutout their host. Father east, both Tufts squads defeated Boston College, 8-1. The Stanford women visited Princeton and lost, 3-6.
The Cornell Round Robin began on Friday. Cornell defeated both Williams squads. Western Ontario, ranked 23rd, defeated 22nd-ranked Hobart.
Navy’s second round robin of the season also began on Friday. The Midshipmen opened play with a 9-0 victory over MIT.
Trinity hosted Bates and Bowdoin on Saturday. The Bantams defeated both Maine teams. The top-ranked Trinity men were 9-0 victors over Bates and 8-1 winners over Bowdoin. The 3rd-ranked Trinity women were 7-2 winners over Bates and shutout Bowdoin.
In Boston, Colby had a challenging start to their season. The 20th-ranked Colby men lost to 27th-ranked Tufts, 2-7, while the 19th-ranked Colby women lost to 22nd-ranked Tufts, 4-5, and 23rd-ranked Wellesley, 4-5. Both Colby squads earned victories over Northeastern.
In Poughkeepsie, NY, Vassar hosted Conn College and Haverford. The Conn College men went 2-0 on the day with an 8-1 victory over Vassar and a 9-0 victory over Haverford. The Haverford men’s 8-1 victory over Vassar extended the Fords’ all-time series record to 16-12. The Vassar women earned an 8-1 win over Haverford and a 7-2 victory over Conn College. The Conn College women defeated Haverford, 6-3.
In New York City, Columbia hosted and defeated both Drexel squads, 9-0.
At the Cornell Round Robin, Western Ontario shutout Dickinson. Both Williams squads defeated Dickinson. The Dickinson women prevailed over William Smith, 7-2. William Smith also lost to Williams, 0-9. The 23rd-ranked Western Ontario Mustangs defeated 18th-ranked Williams, 6-3.
In Clinton, NY, Hamilton and Wesleyan traded matches. The Wesleyan men earned an 8-1 victory, while the Hamilton women edged Wesleyan, 5-4. Both the Hamilton and Wesleyan women defeated Mount Holyoke by a 7-2 score.
Franklin & Marshall visited Princeton. In the women’s match, Princeton won, 8-1. Last season, the F&M men handed Princeton a 4-5 season-opening loss. This season, the 12th-ranked Tigers soundly defeated the 13th-ranked Diplomats, 8-1.
In Philadelphia, both Penn teams opened the season with 9-0 morning victories over George Washington. In the afternoon, the Penn men shutout Virginia, while the Quaker women prevailed 8-1. The Virginia women fell to Stanford, 0-9.
At the Navy Round Robin, 26th-ranked MIT defeated 22nd-ranked Hobart, 8-1. This was MIT’s first-ever victory over Hobart since the teams began playing each other in the 1989-90 season. MIT also defeated Denison. Navy went 3-0 on the day with victories over Hobart, Georgetown, and Bucknell.
On Sunday, Trinity hosted Drexel. The Bantams’ women defeated Drexel, 8-1, while the Trinity men shutout the Dragons. Both Drexel squads won against Bowdoin. Also at Trinity, the Bates women defeated Conn College, 8-1, and the Bobcat men shutout the Camels.
At the Cornell Round Robin, the hosts shutout both Dickinson squads.
In Maryland, Navy wrapped up its round round robin with a victory over Denison. MIT left the Naval Academy with victories over Stanford and Bucknell. MIT concludes the first month of the season with a 7-1 record. Hobart also concluded the event with victories over Stanford, 7-2, and Denison, 6-3.
The Columbia women travelled to Philadelphia to face Stanford. The Lyons fell to Stanford, 2-7.
Williams visited Hamilton in the Ephs’ final stop on their upstate New York road trip. Williams shutout the Hamilton men and women.
George Washington travelled north from Philadelphia to face Princeton. In the women’s match, Princeton prevailed, 8-1. The 12th-ranked Princeton Tigers defeated the 11th-ranked Colonials, 8-1. It appears the young Princeton Tiger men’s squad is ready to begin climbing the rankings.
The Tufts men defeated both Brandeis and Bryant.
Franklin & Marshall hosted Virginia. In the men’s match, F&M defeated the Cavaliers, 7-2, and in the women’s match, Virginia edged the 14th-ranked Diplomats, 5-4.
In club-vs.-club team action, both Northeastern University squads defeated Boston University.
Schools are reminded that to qualify for the National Team Championships, a minimum number of matches must be played at specific periods of the season:
- Varsity teams are required to play ten (10) matches against other CSA teams to enter team championships. At minimum, each team should have at least 6 different opponents. Varsity teams should play the majority of their matches against other varsity schools.
- Club teams are required to play eight (8) matches against other CSA teams to enter team championships. At minimum, each team should have at least five (5) different opponents.
For a regular season match to officially count for ranking purposes, each team must have at least seven players. Matches with less than seven players per team will not count towards the required number of matches for entry into the National Team Championships.
