Cornell: 2016 – 2017 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

Cornell University Ithaca, NY — The 2015 – 2016 season was filled with ups and downs for Cornell.  They lost close matches with Drexel and Dartmouth, but they also defeated Princeton and Penn. The Big Red made it to the Hoehn Cup final and finished last season as the 10th-ranked team in the nation. The squad lost two players to graduation, but they return an experienced line-up. The team will also have a new coach. After twelve seasons, former head coach Mark Devoy, who had a 126-89 record, has left the program. The Big Red’s strength last season came at the bottom of their line-up. The lower 3 had a .722 win percentage, which was much higher than the top (.389) and middle (.481) of the order. If Cornell intends to move up the rankings, they will need to increase their win percentages in the top and middle of the order. Co-captaining the squad will be Kevin Flannery and Harry Freeman. Freeman, last season’s top player, collected multiple team honors including sportsmanship and most improved player awards at Cornell’s postseason banquet. Cornell is close to returning to the Potter Cup.
