Bard Wins the 2016 Men’s College Squash Sloane Award for Team Sportsmanship

Bard College

Hatfield, MA — Bard College won the 2016 Sloane Award for Team Sportsmanship.

Since 1981, the Men’s College Squash Association has given an award to recognize the team that best exemplifies the ideals of sportsmanship throughout the season. The award was renamed in honor of former Williams and Haverford coach Sean Sloane in 2005; Sloane’s squad at Williams won the first team sportsmanship award in 1981.

Bard was recognized by their peers for their outstanding sportsmanship. Each year, coaches discuss with their teams which team they feel is deserving of this award. Coaches then vote on the award at the National Team Championships, with each team getting one vote.

Bard finished the season with a 11-8 record. The Raptors went 2-1 at the 2016 Men’s National Team Championships and finished the season ranked 45th in the nation.

Bard is led by head coach Craig Thorpe-Clark. In his two seasons at the helm of Bard squash, Thorpe-Clark has begun to transform the program. This past season, he guided the Raptors to 11 wins, which eclipsed the previous season high of 8 victories. In addition, he helped Bard to their first-ever Liberty League Championship victory with a win over rival Vassar.

“It’s a great honor and I’m absolutely delighted for the team. It’s true recognition that we’re doing the right things on and off the court. We’re proud because it concurs with the recent success we’ve had, even though the award has nothing to do with winning,” Thorpe-Clark explained to Bard Athletics.

The 2016 Sloane Award marks the first College Squash Association honor for the Bard Raptors.
