2016 National Team Championships (Weekend 1): Day 1 Early Afternoon Report

New Haven, CT — The 2016 Men’s and Women’s College Squash Association National Team Championships are underway.

Women’s C Division – E Division

Women’s C Division (Walker Cup): Amherst started the tournament against NESCAC rival Tufts. Amherst opened with an 8-0 lead, but the Jumbos won the final contest. Amherst advances, 8-1. St. Lawrence and Bates met in a rematch from the regular season. Once again, Bates was victorious, this time with a 6-3 victory over the Saints. Bowdoin and Wellesley met for another rematch from the regular season. Wellesley improved on the match score from their earlier meeting, but lost, 2-7. In the closest match of the Walker Cup quarterfinals, Colby advanced with a 5-4 victory over Hamilton. The match could have gone to either team with the match at the #4 position being decided by tiebreakers in the 5th game.

Women’s D Division (Epps Cup): The first Epps Cup matches will be played at 5:00 PM ET.

Women’s E Division: The first E Division matches will be played at 7:30 PM ET.

Men’s C Division – H Division

Men’s C Division (Summers Cup): The first Summers Cup matches will be played at 2:30 PM ET.

Men’s D Division (Conroy Cup): In a morning match, top seed Western Ontario opened play against Hamilton. Despite Hamilton’s individual vicotries in three of the top five positions, the Mustangs’ depth proved too much. Western Ontario advanced with a 6-3 victory. Going into this season, MIT was 0-2 all-time versus Stanford; however, after two regular season meetings, both 5-4 MIT wins, the Engineers tied the all-time series at 2-2. At today’s Conroy Cup quarterfinal, Stanford won the match to bring the all-time series to 3-2. Dickinson advanced against follow Pennsylvania school Bucknell. The Red Devils won, 8-1. The final opening round match will be played between Denison and Johns Hopkins at 5:00 PM.

Men’s E Division: (Chaffee Cup): The first Chaffee Cup matches will be played at 2:30 PM ET.

Men’s F Division (Serues Cup): The first Serues Cup matches will be played  at 5:00 PM ET.

Men’s G Division (Hawthorn Cup): The first Hawthorn Cup matches will be played at 3:15 PM ET.

Men’s H Division: The first H Division matches will be played this evening.
