Hatfield, MA — For the week ending 12/6/2015, Nicole Ampatey (Bowdoin) has been named the women’s [hpow], while Matt Giegerich (Dartmouth) and Tyler Odell (Penn) have been named co-men’s [hpow].

A [hpow] should have a significant impact on his or her team’s performance during the prior week and demonstrate sportsmanship. Coaches and Sports Information Directors may nominate players.

Nicole Ampatey (Bowdoin College): Bowdoin hosted Bates last Friday. Bowdoin had not bested their Pine Tree state rival since 2009. Senior Nicole Ampatey faced Bates’ Cata Robert in the match at the #9 position. Ampatey delivered a 3-1 victory (11-5, 11-9, 5-11, and 11-6), which was crucial for the Polar Bears. Bowdoin won the team match, 5-4, upsetting the Bobcats.

Matt Giegerich (Dartmouth College): To say Dartmouth was an underdog against Harvard may be an understatement. After all, the Big Green had 73 straight losses to the Crimson. With the match tied at 4-4, #5 Matt Giegerich faced Harvard’s Madhav Dhingra. Down 1-2 in games, Giegerich tied the match. The fifth game went to tie-breakers and the freshman stepped up and sealed the historic win for Dartmouth (11-8, 8-11, 8-11, 11-6, and 13-11).

Tyler Odell (University of Pennsylvania): Penn’s senior captain had quite a two-week stretch. He went 4-0 in that timeframe and helped the 7th-ranked Quakers earn victories over 8th-ranked Drexel, 4th-ranked Rochester, and 3rd-ranked St. Lawrence. With the team match against the Saints tied at 4-4, Odell and Julian Jervis played a back-and-forth match. Odell prevailed in five games to seal Penn’s victory  (7-11, 11-8, 11-7, 10-12, and 11-7).
