Northampton, MA — It was a week of college squash upsets.
On Monday, George Washington concluded their California adventure in memorable fashion. The Stanford women defeated the Colonials, 6-3, in December, but George Washington was prepared for the rematch. On Stanford’s home courts, the 8th-ranked Colonials defeated 7th-ranked Stanford, 5-4. The GW men also defeated Stanford, 9-0.
Williams hosted St. Lawrence on Tuesday. The Ephs women defeated the Saints, 7-2. The top-ranked St. Lawrence men earned an 8-1 victory.
Fresh off their matches with St. Lawrence, Williams had a Connecticut road trip on Wednesday. The Ephs men and women visited both Yale and Trinity, losing each match, 0-9.
MIT began the second semester on Friday by hosting Middlebury. The Panthers proved too much and shutout the Engineers. Trinity hosted Columbia. The Bantams women shutout the Lions, while the men won 7-2. Bowdoin was in Western Massachusetts for an afternoon match with Amherst. The Jeffs women won 6-3, while the Amherst men prevailed 5-4. Drexel hosted Dartmouth. In the women’s match, the Dragons nearly defeated the 10th-ranked Big Green, losing 4-5. The Dartmouth men defeated Drexel, 7-2.
Mount Holyoke hosted Navy and Bates on Saturday morning. The Bates women shutout the Lyons, while the 14th-ranked Bates men edged 12th-ranked Navy, 5-4. Navy traveled south for an afternoon match with Trinity. The Bantams defeated the Midshipmen, 9-0. Bates continued their Pioneer Valley trip by defeating both Amherst squads.
Williams hosted Bowdoin, Colby, and Middlebury. The Middlebury men prevailed over Bowdoin, 8-1, and Colby, 7-2. The Middlebury women also defeated Bowdoin, 9-0, and Colby, 8-1. Both Williams squads defeated Bowdoin and Colby.
In Ivy League action, the 3rd-ranked Yale men were defeated by 6th-ranked Columbia, 5-4. This marked Columbia’s first victory over Yale in the program’s history. The Yale women shutout Columbia. Both Cornell squads defeated Brown, while Penn defeated Dartmouth. The Harvard men and women visited Princeton. Each Crimson squad earned a 7-2 victory.
On Sunday, Dartmouth visited Princeton. In the men’s match, Princeton defeated the Big Green, 6-3. In the women’s match, the Tigers won, 9-0. The top-ranked Harvard women visited 3rd-ranked Penn. The Quakers captured the match, 5-4, to hand the Crimson their first loss since last season’s national championship final. Harvard captured the men’s match. Both Columbia squads defeated Brown, 8-1. The Yale men rebounded with a 7-2 victory over Cornell. In the women’s match, Yale earned a 6-3 victory.
Navy concluded their Connecticut/Western Mass trip with an 8-1 victory over Amherst. Williams hosted Bates. The men’s and women’s matches were very close, with the 15th-ranked Ephs men prevailing over 14th-ranked Bates, 5-4, while the Ephs women also defeated Bates, 5-4.
Middlebury defeated Mount Holyoke, 9-0.
Coaches and Team Contacts, please remember to enter your team’s results in the US Squash Scoring System on the day of each match. Each player must be named in the results (“Not on Roster” entries will not be tolerated) or penalties may be applied.
Schools are reminded that to qualify for the National Team Championships, a minimum number of matches must be played at specific periods of the season:
- Varsity teams are required to play ten (10) matches against other CSA teams to enter team championships. At minimum, each team should have at least 6 different opponents. Varsity teams should play the majority of their matches against other varsity schools.
- Club teams are required to play eight (8) matches against other CSA teams to enter team championships. In addition, club teams must play at least four (4) matches between January 1st and February 10th. At minimum, each team should have at least five (5) different opponents.
For a regular season match to officially count for ranking purposes, each team must have at least seven players. Except for Emerging Teams, matches with less than seven players per team will not count towards the required number of matches for entry into the National Team Championships.
