Around the Courts: College Squash Highlights (11/23/2014)

College Squash AssociationNorthampton, MA — Before classes dismiss for the Thanksgiving holiday, there was a very busy weekend of college squash.

On Tuesday, MIT hosted Tufts. The Jumbos emerged with a 6-3 win. The Tufts women faced Wellesley. The Blue Pride captured the match.

Drexel traveled to Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday. The 17th-ranked F&M women upset the 13th-ranked Drexel squad, 7-2. In the men’s match, the 7th-ranked Diplomats held off the 12th-ranked Dragons, 5-4.

On Thursday, the Northeastern men defeated Boston University, 8-1.

In Boston on Friday, Connecticut College faced Tufts. The men’s match was very close with three individual matches going five games. The Camels edged the Jumbos, 5-4. In the women’s match, Conn College defeated a shorthanded Tufts squad. On Saturday, Conn College defeated MIT, 7-2, but lost to Wellesley, 2-7. The Camel women also defeated Boston College.

Also on Friday, Cornell defeated both Williams squads. The Big Red men also defeated Western Ontario, 6-3. On Saturday, Cornell continued their winning ways by defeating George Washington. The Cornell women shutout Stanford. The George Washington men defeated Western Ontario, 8-1, and the George Washington women lost to Stanford, 3-6.

Amherst hosted Northeastern on Saturday. The Jeffs’ men won 8-1, while the women won 9-0.

Northwestern hosted a number of teams this weekend. The Wildcats went 3-0 with wins over USC, Duke, and Washington in St. Louis.

In New Jersey on Saturday, the Haverford men defeated Fordham, 5-4, but lost to NYU 1-8. The Haverford women won went 3-0 with wins over Fordham, NYU, and Rochester. The Haverford women defeated Rochester, 8-1.

Columbia visited Drexel on Saturday. Both Lions squads defeated the Dragons.

Princeton opened the season by hosting Franklin & Marshall on Saturday. The Tigers swept the F&M women. In the men’s match, 10th-ranked Princeton defeated the 7th-ranked Diplomats, 6-3. The Princeton men traveled to Navy on Sunday and were upset by the 16th-ranked Midshipmen, 5-4. The Princeton women hosted Wesleyan and won, 8-1.

Franklin & Marshall returned to Lancaster on Sunday for a doubleheader with Dickinson and Columbia. Both Diplomat squads defeated Dickinson. The Columbia women defeated F&M, 7-2. Against the 6th-ranked Columbia men, F&M lost, 4-5.

Both Wesleyan squads lost to Brown, 1-8, on Saturday.

Hamilton hosted Tufts and Williams on Saturday. The Continentals defeated the Tufts men and women, but both squads lost to Williams.

Penn toured Maine on Saturday. The Quakers defeated Bates and Colby. On Sunday, they completed the Maine trifecta by defeating Bowdoin.

This weekend Vassar hosted the Liberty League Men’s Championship. Saturday’s matches saw St. Lawrence defeat  Bard and Hobart, while Rochester defeated Vassar and Hobart. Vassar defeated Bard. The championship came down to a meeting between St. Lawrence, ranked 2nd in the nation, and Rochester, ranked 5th. St. Lawrence captured the Liberty League Championship, 6-3.

The Liberty League does not hold a women’s championship, but St. Lawrence, Williams Smith, and Vassar played this weekend. Both William Smith and St. Lawrence defeated Vassar. On Sunday, St. Lawrence defeated William Smith, 7-2.

Coaches and Team Contacts, please remember to enter your team’s results in the US Squash Scoring System on the day of each match. Each player must be named in the results (“Not on Roster” entries will not be tolerated) or penalties may be applied.

Schools are reminded that to qualify for the National Team Championships, a minimum number of matches must be played at specific periods of the season:

  • Varsity teams are required to play ten (10) matches against other CSA teams to enter team championships. At minimum, each team should have at least 6 different opponents. Varsity teams should play the majority of their matches against other varsity schools.
  • Club teams are required to play eight (8) matches against other CSA teams to enter team championships. In addition, club teams must play at least four (4) matches between January 1st and February 10th. At minimum, each team should have at least five (5) different opponents.

For a regular season match to officially count for ranking purposes, each team must have at least seven players. Except for Emerging Teams, matches with less than seven players per team will not count towards the required number of matches for entry into the National Team Championships.
