Northampton, MA — In the final weekend in January, there were events at Amherst, Smith, Vassar, Virginia and Yale.
In the annual battle for supremacy in the Nutmeg state, Trinity visited Yale on Wednesday. In the women’s match, Yale took a commanding 4-1 lead, but the Bantams did not give up. They won the final four matches to capture the team match, 5-4. In the men’s match, Trinity won the final match to earn a 5-4 victory over their Connecticut rivals.
Also on Wednesday, Penn and Drexel met for Philadelphia bragging rights. The Penn men defeated Drexel, 7-2, while the Penn women shutout the Dragons. In Providence, Brown hosted Amherst. Both Bears’ squads defeated the Jeffs.
On Thursday, the Virginia men defeated Georgetown, 5-4.
William Smith visited Conn College on Friday and defeated the Camels 6-3. The Colby men captured a 7-2 victory against Hobart. The Camel men defeated Hobart, 5-4, on Saturday. The Tufts women edged Conn College, 5-4, while the Camel men defeated Tufts.
The Yale Round Robin was held this weekend. On Friday, in a highly anticipated match-up for the Yale men, the 3rd-ranked Bulldogs defeated St. Lawrence, 5-4. The Yale women shutout both Stanford and St. Lawrence. The George Washington women shutout Williams, while the Ephs men defeated GW, 7-2.
At Yale on Saturday, Franklin & Marshall shutout the Williams’ men. In the women’s match, the Ephs defeated F&M, 9-0. The F&M men also defeated Western Ontario. The Diplomat women defeated Bowdoin, but lost to Middlebury.
The Yale men took care of Western Ontario, 8-1, and Navy, 9-1, while the Bulldog women shutout both Middlebury and George Washington. Both Dartmouth squads defeated Bates, 6-3. Navy defeated Middlebury, 6-3, and Bates, 5-4.
Also at Yale, the Bowdoin men and women lost to George Washington and Drexel. The Polar Bear men defeated Hobart. The Bates men lost to Dartmouth, 3-6. The Bobcat women lost to both Stanford and Dartmouth. On Sunday, the GW women defeated Middlebury, 7-2. Mount Holyoke wrapped up its trip to the Yale Round Robin by defeating Colby and losing to Bowdoin, 3-6.
On Saturday, Wesleyan hosted Drexel. The Cardinal men came up just short, falling to the Dragons, 4-5. The Dragon women defeated Wesleyan 8-1. On Sunday, both Drexel squads defeated Conn College.
The top-ranked Trinity men defeated Rochester, 7-2.
St. Lawrence continued its road trip by visiting Harvard. The Crimson shutout the St. Lawrence women, while the Harvard men won a competitive 8-1 match. On Sunday, the Harvard men defeated Rochester.
This weekend, Virginia hosted a round robin. The Cavaliers’ men defeated Charleston, Notre Dame, and Fordham. The Virginia women beat Vanderbilt and Notre Dame, but lost to Georgetown.
Smith hosted Colgate, Wellesely, and William Smith on Saturday. The Pioneers lost matches against each opponent. Wellesley earned three victories at the event. William Smith defeated Colgate.
Vassar hosted and lost to Tufts, Haverford, and Northeastern.
On Sunday, Amherst hosted the annual “Little Three” Championship between Amherst, Wesleyan, and Williams. The Ephs’ men and women continued their winning streak and captured the event. The Amherst women defeated Wesleyan, while the Cardinals defeated the Amherst men, 7-2.
Coaches and Team Contacts, please remember to enter your team’s results in the US Squash Scoring System on the day of each match. Each player must be named in the results (“Not on Roster” entries will not be tolerated) or penalties may be applied.
Schools are reminded that to qualify for the National Team Championships, a minimum number of matches must be played at specific periods of the season:
- Varsity teams are required to play ten (10) matches against other CSA teams to enter team championships. At minimum, each team should have at least 6 different opponents. Varsity teams should play the majority of their matches against other varsity schools.
- Club teams are required to play eight (8) matches against other CSA teams to enter team championships. In addition, club teams must play at least four (4) matches between January 1st and February 10th. At minimum, each team should have at least five (5) different opponents.
For a regular season match to officially count for ranking purposes, each team must have at least seven players. Except for Emerging Teams, matches with less than seven players per team will not count towards the required number of matches for entry into the National Team Championships.
