2013 Women’s National Team Championships: Day 1 Morning Report

New Haven, CT — The 2013 Women’s National Team Championships are underway at Yale’s Brady Squash Center. With only a few results in, we’ve already seen a dramatic upset in the C Division, courtesy of Drexel.

A Division (Howe Cup): Harvard-Stanford and Penn-Cornell are currently on court now.

B Division (Kurtz Cup): B Division play will begin later this afternoon.

C Division (Walker Cup): Drexel is in the running for 2013’s Most Improved Team, and today’s match showed why. The Dragons came into the tournament seeded fifth in the C Division and ranked 21st overall. In the first round, they faced Mount Holyoke, the C Division number 4 seed. The two teams were neck-and-neck throughout the match, and by the time the final match was on court, the score was tied 4-all. The match came down to the number 4 contest between Drexel’s Laura Rahauser and Mount Holyoke’s Samantha Rosado. The two players traded points throughout an incredibly close fourth game, with Rosado hanging on to force a fifth. A composed Rahauser stormed back to take the fifth game and the match. The 5-4 win guarantees that the Dragons will have their best season finish in program history. In other C Division action, top-seeded Wesleyan cruised past Wellesley, 9-0. Wesleyan and Drexel will compete in one of the C Division semifinals tomorrow.

D Division (Epps Cup): The first flight of D Division play featured two all-club match-ups. Boston College, the top seed in the division, faced some resistance from Beantown rivals Northeastern. Northeastern posted wins at number  1, 3, and 5, but the Eagles prevailed overall, advancing with a 6-3 win. Fourth-seeded Virginia and fifth-seeded Johns Hopkins met for the third time this season. The two teams were tied 1-1 in the regular season, with Virginia winning the most recent match. The Cavaliers backed up that win with another 7-2 victory today, taking the lead in their season series with the Blue Jays. Virginia advancing to the semifinals, where they will play BC. Georgetown and St. Lawrence are currently locked in a competitive match on court now.

E Division: E Division play is scheduled to begin later this afternoon.
