Around the Courts: College Squash Highlights (2/12/2012)

College Squash AssociationNorthampton, MA — The final weekend of the college squash regular season was packed with crucial matches.

Harvard travelled to Yale on Sunday. The Bulldogs, the second-ranked women’s team, were hoping to defeat the Crimson to take the Ivy League title and the top position in the rankings going into Howe Cup. The Bulldogs took the early lead and were up 4-3, but the Crimson battled back and captured the match and the Ivy League title by a match score of 5-4. The two teams seem destined for a Howe Cup finals rematch. With 4 four-game matches in today’s contest, including the Bulldogs’ Kimberly Hay’s victory over Harvard’s Laura Gemmell, the Howe Cup and the national championship could be either team’s to grab. Yale’s men defeated Harvard.

Princeton clinched a share of the men’s Ivy League title by defeating Cornell. This marks the Tigers’ 17th Ivy League crown. The results of Princeton’s match with Columbia, which could give them sole possession of the Ivy League title, had not been reported as of publication.

The Trinity women travelled to Princeton on Saturday. This was a pivotal match to decide the final rankings going into Howe Cup. Trinity had beaten Penn earlier in the season, while Princeton had lost to Penn. The results of Saturday’s contest would decide the 3rd, 4th, and 5th ranking positions.  Princeton made a statement by defeating the Bantams 8-1. It appears that Penn and Trinity will face off in a challenging first round match at Howe Cup.

All eyes were on St. Lawrence’s men this weekend. The Saints faced Williams and Middlebury and they had an opportunity to shake up the seeds for the Hoehn Cup. After a 6-3 loss to Williams on Saturday, St. Lawrence faced Middlebury on Sunday. Middlebury had beaten Navy earlier in the season, while Navy had defeated St. Lawrence. A win by St. Lawrence could create a triangle for the ranking committee that could rearrange the seeds for the B division of the National Team Championships. St. Lawrence won 6-3.

Middlebury’s women faced Bates at MIT, a neutral site, on Saturday. The 9th-ranked Bobcats have been facing injuries of late and Middlebury was looking to take advantage of that fact. Middlebury won 7-2, but the match was incredibly close with six individual matches going to at least four games.
