Around the Courts: College Squash Highlights (1/29/2012)

College Squash AssociationNorthampton, MA — As January draws to a close, there were many exciting college squash matches.

Rochester had a challenging road trip this weekend. The Yellowjackets lost to Trinity on Friday night before heading to Cambridge. Fifth-ranked Harvard upset 4th-ranked Rochester 7-2. The Yellowjackets rebounded with a 6-3 victory over Dartmouth.

The Trinity women had one of the more exciting matches of the weekend. They faced 3rd-ranked Penn. After the first round, the Bantams trailed, but Trinity tied the match at 4-4. Catalina Pelaez  defeated the Quakers’ Rachel Goh to claim the victory for Trinity. The Trinity men also defeated Penn.

A number of teams were in Maine this weekend. The Bates women went 4-0 on the weekend with victories over Tufts, George Washington, Drexel, and Mount Holyoke.  Bowdoin defeated Drexel, Wellesley, and Tufts, but lost to Brown. Colby, the final host for the weekend, beat Drexel, but lost to Mount Holyoke and Brown.

In men’s action, Bowdoin and Colby played a weekend warmup on Thursday night. Bowdoin escaped with a 5-4 victory. On the weekend, Bowdoin and Colby both beat BC and Drexel. Bates went 5-0 with victories over Tufts, Drexel, BC, MIT, and George Washington.

This weekend featured Drexel’s first matches of the winter semester. The Dragons return home for Thursday’s inaugural matches on their new courts. They will face Haverford.

The Little Three championships were held at Wesleyan on Saturday between Amherst, Wesleyan, and Williams. It is considered the oldest conference rivalry in college athletics. Williams men’s and women’s teams captured the titles.

Smith College hosted its own invitational this weekend. The Pioneers lost to William Smith on Saturday and the results of Sunday’s matches were not available at the time of publication. At the invitational, William Smith and Wellesley defeated Vassar.

Coaches and Team Contacts, please remember to enter your team’s results in the US Squash Scoring System on the day of each match. Each player must be named in the results (“Not on Roster” entries will not be tolerated) or penalties may be applied.
