Around the Courts: College Squash Highlights (12/11/2011)

College Squash AssociationNorthampton, MA — As college squash enters the semester break, here is a recap this week’s matches.

On Wednesday, the  Naval Academy hosted Penn. Supported by the 10 Company, the 15th ranked Midshipmen took a 4-2 advantage on the 9th-ranked Quakers.  However, Penn battled back to tie the match at 4-4. The match came down to the #3s, Navy’s James Kacergis and Penn’s Danny Greenberg. Kacergis evened the match at 2-2, before Greenberg took the deciding game and the match (9-11, 11-3, 11-7,8-11, and 11-2).

Also on Wednesday, Tufts defeated MIT, and Fordham defeated NYU.

Thursday evening Wesleyan visited Mount Holyoke. The 13th-ranked Lyons looked strong with an 8-1 victory. Hannah Jenkins recorded Wesleyan’s sole victory at the #8 position.

On Friday, Princeton hosted Williams.  The Tigers defeated both Williams squads.  Princeton also defeated the George Washington men and women on Saturday.

The Ephs drove farther south to Penn for matches on Saturday. The Quaker women defeated the Ephs 9-0. Penn captured each individual match 3-0.  For the men, Williams captured the matches at #2, #3, and #5. Penn won 6-3.

Williams stopped at Trinity on their way back to Williamstown. Each Bantam squad shutout the Ephs. For the Trinity men, this marked their 250th straight victory. They have not lost a match since the 1998 Potter Cup finals. To put 250 victories into perspective, this is 72 more consecutive wins than the famous wining streak of UCLA’s men’s basketball team  (88 games) and UConn’s women’s basketball team (90 games) combined.

Amhert hosted Northeastern on Saturday. The Lord Jeffs shutout both Northeastern squads. The Amherst men also defeated MIT.
