Amherst, MA — In January, Smith College, Mount Holyoke College, and Amherst College hosted the 2011 Pioneer Valley Invitational. The annual event, which has also been called the Smith/Mount Holyoke Invitational, had fifteen teams competing over three days.
The Pioneer Valley Invitational propelled the Middebury men to their highest ranking in school history. The Panthers beat Bates and George Washington during the tournament to move them into the thirteenth ranking position.
Middlebury faced their NESCAC rival Amherst during the tournament. In the match at the number three position, Amherst’s Charles Quintin faced Middlebury’s Parker Hurst. The pair had a four-game match with Hurst winning 11-13, 11-6, 11-1, and 11-7
Middlebury concluded the season ranked fourteenth, while Amherst finished nineteenth.
