Wesleyan’s Squash Teams Train in Arizona

The Wesleyan squash teams just completed a training trip to Arizona. Below is an article by Grace Zimmerman detailing part of the trip. To learn more about the adventures of the Cardinals, visit the Wesleyan Squash Weblog.

Tempe, AZ — This morning the squash team arose to sun and soreness. Day three. We are champs. After a light jog to the club (2.78 miles) our legs were put to the test through Patti’s Pain Program and Shona’s Squash Smarts. We discussed tactics regarding match play, and implemented our ideas into practice game situations. Patti had us running under the hot Arizona sun (which Danielle loved), and we had a fierce dodgeball tournament. Later that afternoon in our free time, some of us returned to the club for some hydrotherapy. Luke was found in the sauna, Rosa in the hot tub, and Mary on the water slide.

The stronger of us (ahem Grace, John, Tanesha, Rosa, Mary, Jeff, and of course Zander) braved the outdoor pool and our aching muscles, enjoy[ing] the icy water. Water slide races were to be had. There was much prunage. Later that evening we scrimmaged more club members. Matt went to four with the head pro, Diana went to five, and room 142 went to three. Holla. Tomorrow we’re pumped to teach some young squashers and gorge ourselves on Tex Mex. Long live Arizona.

Editor’s Note: The team also volunteered with the Arizona Head Start program. According to Mary Foster and Kar-Anne Tan, the team “went to the Multiple-Generational Center, where we met about 30 children around the ages of 4 or 5 that were part of the program. They were shy at first, but after reading to them and then playing various relays they started to open up and really enjoy themselves. All of the games involved squash rackets so they could be introduced to the sport.”
