Around the Courts: College Squash Weekend Highlights (11/7/2010)

Northampton, MA — The 2010 – 2011 College Squash Association season’s first weekend was packed with exciting squash matches.

All teams that competed this weekend MUST record their match scores as soon as possible in the US Squash Database.  If scores are not reported, it is impossible to rank teams accurately, and penalties, including possible removal from the rankings, will occur.

Navy hosted its first round robin of the year.  The Midshipmen beat four opponents — Virginia, Georgetown, North Carolina, and Vanderbilt — by a score of 9-0 to go undefeated on the weekend.  Georgetown’s men earned two victories with wins over Drexel and Vanderbilt.

George Washington traveled to Haverford.  The Colonials’ men and women both defeated Haverford and Vassar, 9-0.

Kenyon hosted the Midwest Round Robin. Scores are still being reported; however, Kenyon won at least three matches on the weekend.

Yale University hosted the annual Ivy Scrimmages.  As scrimmages, the results don’t count toward national or Ivy League rankings. The competition did, however, give a sense of where teams stand coming into the start of the season.  Yale captured both the men’s and women’s Ivy Scrimmages, a feat that the Bulldogs had never previously accomplished in the same year.  The win by the Yale women included a 6-3 victory over top-ranked defending national champions Harvard.

Rochester, #4 in the Men’s College Squash Association Preseason Rankings, cruised to a 8-1 victory over #8 Western Ontario.  Western Ontario’s sole victory came at the #8 position.

On World Squash Day (November 6th), the Smith College Pioneers taught 32 kids ages 6 to 14 how to play squash.  In addition, they had a team tournament that benefited the United Way.

CollegeSquashAssociation.com will have photos and videos from Ivy Scrimmages throughout the week.  In addition, more detailed write ups of the Midwest Round Robin and the Navy Round Robin will be forthcoming.
