Dartmouth: 2010 – 2011 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

Hanover, NH — The Dartmouth men have been hovering around the seventh and eighth spots in the national rankings for the past seven seasons. Dartmouth upset fifth-ranked Harvard at last year’s Ivy Scrimmages but weren’t able to repeat the victory during the season. But with a number of promising young players on the roster, the Big Green are looking to break into the top 5.

The Big Green’s 2009-2010 captains, Michael Shrubb and Daniel Wagman, have graduated, but the rest of last year’s squad will be back. At the top of the ladder is sophomore Chris Hanson, who represented the US at the World University Squash Games in Melbourne over the summer. Hanson, an All-American and All-Ivy selection, had a number of clutch five-game wins that helped secure the bronze medal for the US. That experience should serve Hanson well coming into the new season.

For the first time since the 2004-2005 season, Dartmouth had two All-Ivy players; junior Nick Sisodia joined Hanson on both All-Ivy and All-American squads. Sisodia was ranked 28th in the preseason individual rankings (which did not include first-year players) and finished the season ranked 17th. His continued improvement will only help the Big Green. Other returning players include senior co-captains Ted Schroeder and Michael Lewis, who was a CSA Scholar Athlete. Lewis wasn’t the only Dartmouth player to be recognized for his academic accomplishments, as Luke Lee was named Academic All-Ivy.

In addition to several walk-ons, the Big Green will have two freshman joining the team: Christopher Jung and Fletcher Pease. Jung, a graduate of Seattle Academy, was invited to go to Ecuador as a member of the US National Team, winning the first two rounds of the individual event and coming in 12th with the team. He should contend for a spot in the top three, while Pease should help to fill in the spots left by Shrubb and Wagman near the bottom of the ladder.

The team is also looking forward to a training trip during winter break, possibly to Miami or Mexico.
