Boston, MA — The Northeastern Huskies opened the 2009-2010 season with back-to-back wins over varsity programs. The Huskies beat Wellesley 6-3 and Smith 5-4. They also closed the regular season with a decisive win over BC, another Boston-area club team, and kicked off their trip to the 2010 Women’s National Team (Howe Cup) with another 5-4 win over Smith.
In between these high points, the Huskies suffered a string of losses, and on the whole it was one of the weaker seasons in Northeastern’s short history as a squash program. That being said, there were some encouraging signs in the Huskies’ performance. They won multiple matches off of several varsity opponents, and in their final contest of the year, they won matches off of Connecticut College, a team they’ll need to pass to move back up into the C Division.
Diana Toubman, who played number 3 last fall, and Rosa Barney, who played number 9, will both be rejoining the squad after being away from the team last winter. Having two known quantities back in the line-up should strengthen the Huskies, and more numbers will help them avoid defaulting individual matches, which they had to do at the end of last season.
Tessa Martin, who finished last season ranked 74th individually, will captain the squad with Emily Raho, and the team will continue to volunteer with SquashBusters, Boston’s urban squash enrichment program.
