Northeastern: 2010 – 2011 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

Boston, MA — For the first time since the 2005-2006 season, the Northeastern men dropped out of the top 30, finishing the 2009-2010 season ranked 31st. However, the Huskies ended the season with an impressive 5-4 win over MIT, reversing a 4-5 loss to the Engineers earlier in the season.

The Huskies also had several competitive losses to varsity programs in the top 20, including a 4-5 loss to Wesleyan, who finished 27th. The Huskies also won several matches off of 2009 Summers Cup champion Conn College. Rematches with these teams as well as other closely ranked competitors like Colgate and Columbia will be key to the Huskies’ improvement this season.

With the graduation of last year’s captain Buddy Scott, the team has new leadership. John Ghublikian will join Pedro Souza to captain the team, and Daniel Hsu has been appointed the new team president. Ghublikian got a different kind of leadership training over the off-season by serving on Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick’s reelection campaign.

The team is expecting two new players to join. Max Kachur, a first-year player out of Taft, will likely play somewhere in the middle of the ladder, as will sophomore transfer DJ Brinkworth. Brinkworth was on the St. Lawrence team last year and played number 6 for the Saints when they hosted the University of Vermont.

Along with trying to improve their ranking, exhibit sportsmanship, and enjoy the game of squash, the Huskies will also continue to volunteer with SquashBusters, Boston’s urban squash program.
