Baghat Wins 2009 Women’s Individual Championship

Williamstown, MA — UPenn junior Kristen Lange and Trinity freshman Nour Baghat met for the third this season in the Ramsay Cup (A Division) finals of the Women’s National Singles Championships, held at Williams College. Baghat had won both their previous match-ups: a close 3-2 contest during the regular season and a 3-1 victory that clinched the Howe Cup consolation finals for Trinity.

This was also Lange’s third trip to the Ramsay Cup finals, having lost to Harvard’s Kyla Grigg in 2007 and Yale’s Miranda Ranieri in 2008.

Both Lange and Baghat cruised through the opening rounds of the tournament. Lange, the 2009 Ivy League player of the year, gave up only twenty points en route to the final. The top-seeded Baghat, who entered the tournament undefeated in intercollegiate play, was equally dominant on her half of the bracket, winning all four of her matches 3-0.

Baghat took the first two games of the final 9-5, 9-4, while Lange battled back to take the third game 9-4, just as she had two weeks earlier at Howe Cup. While Lange carried momentum with her into the next game, it wasn’t enough to outlast Baghat, who secured the national title with a 9-7 win in the fourth, leaving Lange with one last shot at the championship in 2010.

Playing on her home courts, Williams junior Jennifer Coxe defeated Yale freshman Lexi Van Arkle 3-1 to win the Holleran Cup (B Division).
