Hatfield, MA — As January comes to a close, college squash was in full force in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Maryland, New York, and Pennsylvania.
The first matches of the week occurred on Wednesday. Colby visited Bates. The home squads took care of the Mules, 8-1 in the men’s match and 6-3 in the women’s match. Conn College travelled north to face Mount Holyoke. The Camels edges Mount Holyoke, 5-4. MIT hosted Wellesley and Tufts. Wellesley defeated Tufts, 8-1, while MIT was a 7-2 victor over the Jumbos.
Hartford was the center of the squash world on Thursday. Trinity hosted Harvard. The top-ranked Bantam men showed their strength with a 7-2 victory over Harvard. The 5th-ranked Trinity women were hoping to upset the top-ranked Crimson women, but fell, 2-7.
Bowdoin hosted and defeated Conn College on Friday. The Polar Bear men shutout Conn College, while Camels fell 1-8 in the women’s match. Nearby, Colby hosted Virginia. Colby edged the Cavaliers’ men, 5-4, but lost to the Virginia women, 3-6.
Yale’s round robin began on Friday. The Bulldogs defeated both George Washington squads. The 6th-ranked Yale women also defeated 4th-ranked Stanford, 7-2. The Middlebury men, ranked 15th in the nation, edged 14th-ranked Navy, 5-4.
In Baltimore, Fordham defeated Lehigh, 6-3.
Saturday, the Maine triumvirate shuffled opponents. Bates hosted Virginia and Conn. The Bobcat men earned a pair of victories on Senior Day. They defeated Virginia, 8-1, and Conn College, 9-0. The Bates women fell to Virginia, 4-5, but shutout Conn College. Both Camel squads lost to Virginia. Bowdoin drove to Colby. The Polar Bear women defeated Colby, 5-4, but the Mules’ men handed Bowdoin a 1-8 loss. Colby also defeated both Tufts squads.
Haverford hosted Boston College and Bucknell. In the men’s matches, Haverford defeated Boston College, 8-1, but lost to Bucknell, 4-5. In the women’s matches, Haverford lost to both Boston College and Bucknell, 3-6.
Fordham concluded their run in Baltimore by going 2-1 on Saturday. The Rams defeated Penn State, 7-2, and Miami, 5-4, but lost to Denison, 2-7.
Penn hosted the Princeton squads. The Quakers prevailed in both matches, 8-1.
St. Lawerence hosted Franklin & Marshall. The teams traded matches. The Saints won the men’s match, 9-0, while F&M captured the women’s match, 8-1.
A number of squads congregated at Vassar for matches. The Brewers’ men were unable to earn victories on Senior Day. Vassar dropped matches to both Colgate and Boston University. The Vassar women shutout Boston University. Bard earned their 8th victory of the season by beating Vermont, 9-0. This ties the school record for victories in a season. The Raptors came close to breaking their record, but they dropped three of five 5-game matches in their loss to Boston University.
Wellesley shutout Northeastern on Saturday.
Drexel visited Wesleyan. The Dragons earned victories over both Wesleyan teams.
William Smith hosted a round robin. The Herons went 2-0, earning victories over Colgate, 9-0, and Rochester, 9-0.
At the Yale Round Robin, Brown and George Washington traded matches. The Brown women topped the Colonials, 5-4. The George Washington men earned a 7-2 victory over the Bears, which marked their second victory over an Ivy League opponent. Cornell and Drexel also traded matches. The Dragon men defeated the Big Red, 6-3, while the Cornell women prevailed, 7-2. The Dartmouth women went 1-1 on the day. They fell to Stanford, 1-8, but picked up a 6-3 victory over Middlebury. The Middlebury women also lost to Yale, 0-9. Stanford was victorious over the Cornell women, 6-3, and defeated Williams, 7-2. The Yale men picked up a pair of victories against Navy, 8-1, and Williams, 9-0. The Yale women also shutout Williams.
Matches at Yale continued on Sunday. The 13th-ranked George Washington men edged 12th-ranked Cornell, 5-4. In the women’s match, the Cornell women defeated George Washington, 6-3. Navy topped Brown, 5-4, to take a 9-8 all-time series lead. The Stanford women lost to Princeton, 2-7, but defeated Drexel, 8-1. Drexel earned a 9-0 victory over Mount Holyoke. The Brown women defeated Mount Holyoke, 9-0.
The Trinity men hosted and defeated Princeton, 9-0.
Rochester defeated the Franklin & Marshall men, 9-0.
In Maine, Colby defeated both Conn College squads. Bowdoin lost to the Virginia men, 1-8, and the Virginia women, 2-7.
On Sunday, Williams hosted the annual Little Three Championships. For the women, Williams defeated Amherst, 8-1, and Wesleyan, 8-1. Amherst also defeated Wesleyan, 8-1. In the men’s matches, Williams defeated Amherst, 8-1, and Wesleyan, 8-1. The Wesleyan men edged Amherst, 5-4. In the three-school rivalry event, Williams captured both the men’s and women’s titles. The Amherst women and the Wesleyan men finished in second place.
In club vs. club men’s matches, Miami defeated Maryland, 7-0; Miami defeated Swartmore, 7-2; Johns Hopkins defeated Miami, 7-0; Denison defeated Richmond, 7-0; UNC defeated Lafayette defeated, 6-1; Lafayette defeated Duke, 5-2; Swarthmore defeated Lafayette, 7-0; Swathmore defeated Duke, 5-2; Lehigh and Richmod tied at 4-4; Richmond defeated Swarthmore, 6-2; UNC defeated Lafayette, 6-1; UNC defeated Maryland, 6-3; UNC defeated Charleston, 5-4; Georgetown defeated Penn State, 9-0 .
In club vs. club women’s matches, Washington in St. Loius defeated Fordham, NYU, Minnesota, and Smith.
Coaches and Team Contacts, please remember to enter your team’s results in the US Squash Scoring System on the day of each match. Each player must be named in the results (“Not on Roster” entries will not be tolerated) or penalties may be applied.
Schools are reminded that to qualify for the National Team Championships, a minimum number of matches must be played at specific periods of the season:
- Varsity teams are required to play ten (10) matches against other CSA teams to enter team championships. At minimum, each team should have at least 6 different opponents. Varsity teams should play the majority of their matches against other varsity schools.
- Club teams are required to play eight (8) matches against other CSA teams to enter team championships. In addition, club teams must play at least four (4) matches between January 1st and February 10th. At minimum, each team should have at least five (5) different opponents.
For a regular season match to officially count for ranking purposes, each team must have at least seven players. Matches with less than seven players per team will not count towards the required number of matches for entry into the National Team Championships.
