Hatfield, MA — It was a weekend full of upsets leading up to the Thanksgiving break.
The Amherst men opened their season on Friday. The 23rd-ranked Jeffs hosted and defeated 19th-ranked Western Ontario, 6-3. Also in Western Massachusetts, Williams hosted Columbia. The Columbia Lions defeated both Ephs squads. The Williams women did defeat the Mount Holyoke Lyons to go 1-1 on against schools with feline mascots.
At the Murr Center in Boston, the top-ranked Harvard women opened a round robin by defeating Stanford, 8-1. The Tufts men narrowly lost to Stanford, 4-5, and also lost to Virginia, 0-9. The Tufts women also lost to Virginia, 0-9, but defeated Boston College, 8-1. Stanford topped Wellesley, 9-0, but MIT edged the Stanford men, 5-4. Hamilton lost to the Stanford women, 0-9, and the Stanford men, 1-8. The Stanford women beat Bates, 9-0, while the Bates men defeated Stanford, 9-0.
In Pennsylvania, the Drexel men and women topped Haverford.
Navy hosted and lost to Penn, 0-9.
On Saturday, Cornell, Middlebury, and Western Ontario visited Williams College. Both Cornell squads defeated their hosts. The Big Red won the women’s match 9-0 and the men’s match 8-1. Williams defeated Western Ontario, 8-1. In a rematch of last season’s Summers Cup final, Middlebury faced Western Ontario. The Panthers prevailed again, this time by an 8-1 margin. The Middlebury men and women lost to Cornell.
The 8th-ranked Princeton men visited Franklin & Marshall. Tied at 4-4, the 10th-ranked Diplomats won the final match to defeat the young Princeton squad. This is F&M’s sixth all-time victory over Princeton and their second win in the past three seasons. Both Diplomat squads also defeated Bowdoin.
George Washington hosted Penn. The Quakers prevailed over the Colonials. Penn won the men’s match 8-1 and the women’s match 9-0.
The Dickinson men held their round robin on Saturday. The Red Devil men shutout both Siena and Swarthmore, and defeated NYU, 8-1.
Play in Boston continued on Saturday. The Brown men emerged with a 5-4 victory over Bates, while the women won 8-1. Brown split their matches with Stanford. The women lost 0-9, while the men won, 9-0. Bates topped the Wesleyan men, 9-0, and women, 6-3.The Colby men defeated MIT, 7-2. Colby, ranked 20th, lost to 23rd-ranked Wellesley. Both Colby squads defeated Northeastern. Tufts men and women defeated Boston University. The Jumbos men also defeated Bryant. Wesleyan and Hamilton lost to both Virginia squads.
The third consecutive day of matches in Boston concluded on Sunday. The Stanford women topped Virginia. The Conn College women defeated Northeastern and Boston College. The Hamilton women defeated Tufts, 8-1. The Tufts men, ranked 27th, upset the 25th-ranked Hamilton men, 6-3. The 28th-ranked MIT Engineers also defeated Hamilton, 6-3, for their first victory over the Continentals since the 1998 – 1999 season. The Hamilton women defeated Wellesley, 7-2.
The Trinity women travelled to Boston to face Stanford. The 9th-ranked Stanford women upset the 2nd-ranked Bantams, 5-4.
At Franklin & Marshall, Drexel defeated the Bowdoin men and women. The Bowdoin men defeated Dickinson, 7-2.
Princeton had their home openers. The Princeton men defeated Navy, 8-1, while the Princeton women defeated George Washington, 9-0.
Columbia hosted and defeated both Franklin & Marshall teams. In the men’s match, Columbia prevailed 7-2 and in the women’s match, the Lions won 8-1.
Bard topped Brandeis, 9-0, for their fifth straight victory, which is a program record winning streak.
In club-vs.-club team matches, the Virginia men defeated Stanford.
Coaches and Team Contacts, please remember to enter your team’s results in the US Squash Scoring System on the day of each match. Each player must be named in the results (“Not on Roster” entries will not be tolerated) or penalties may be applied.
Schools are reminded that to qualify for the National Team Championships, a minimum number of matches must be played at specific periods of the season:
- Varsity teams are required to play ten (10) matches against other CSA teams to enter team championships. At minimum, each team should have at least 6 different opponents. Varsity teams should play the majority of their matches against other varsity schools.
- Club teams are required to play eight (8) matches against other CSA teams to enter team championships. In addition, club teams must play at least four (4) matches between January 1st and February 10th. At minimum, each team should have at least five (5) different opponents.
For a regular season match to officially count for ranking purposes, each team must have at least seven players. Except for Emerging Teams, matches with less than seven players per team will not count towards the required number of matches for entry into the National Team Championships.
