Northampton, MA — After a few days off for the Thanksgiving holiday, college squash resumed this week with several matches between highly ranked squads.
On Tuesday, Dartmouth visited Harvard. The Crimson women shutout the Big Green, while the Harvard men won 7-2.
Princeton hosted Drexel on Wednesday. Both Tigers’ squads defeated the Dragons. The women won 9-0, while the men won 6-3. Hamilton hosted and shutout the Colgate men and women. Smith College traveled the 11 miles to Mount Holyoke. The Lyons defeated Smith, 8-1.
Penn hosted the Navy men. The 7th-ranked Quakers earned a 6-3 victory over the 10th-ranked Midshipmen.
On Friday, Tufts visited Vassar. The Jumbos shutout the Brewer men. In the women’s match, a shorthanded Tufts squad won, 7-1.
Upstate New York featured several matches between highly ranked men’s squads. Harvard, the top-ranked men’s team, visited 2nd-ranked St. Lawrence and fifth-ranked Rochester. On Saturday against the Saints, the Crimson lost, 2-7. On Sunday, Harvard lost to the Yellowjackets, 4-5. St. Lawrence’s victory over Harvard marked the Saints’ first victory ever against the Crimson and the team’s first victory over a #1-ranked team. The victory over Harvard marked Rochester’s first victory against the Crimson since 2010. The Princeton men also ventured north this weekend. The Tigers were defeated by Rochester, 1-8, on Saturday, and lost to St. Lawrence, 2-7, in the squads’ first meeting ever on Sunday.
Also in upstate New York, Hobart and William Smith were victorious on Saturday. William Smith traveled to Colgate and shutout both Dickinson and Colgate, while Hobart hosted and defeated Bucknell, 8-1.
Farther south in New York, Vassar hosted Fordham. The Brewer men were shutout by Fordham, while the Vassar women blanked the Rams’ women.
Bard visited Dickinson on Saturday. The Raptors entered the match shorthanded and lost to Dickinson, 1-6. Also in Pennsylvania, the Haverford men defeated Penn State, 8-1.
In Boston, the Brown and George Washington men squared off. The Bears earned a 6-3 victory over the Colonials. Boston University and Bryant played a tight match, which BU won, 5-4.
Colby hosted Tufts. The Mules shutout the Jumbos’ men and edged the Tufts women.
Yale hosted and defeated both Franklin and Marshall squads.
In a matchup of the 9th- and 10th-ranked men’s teams, Navy hoped their visit to Dartmouth would result in an upset. The Midshipmen came up just short, losing 4-5.
On Sunday, Trinity visited Dartmouth. Both Bantams’ c squads defeated their hosts.
Columbia hosted Cornell in an Ivy League showdown on Sunday. In the women’s match, 6th-ranked Cornell handled the 9th-ranked Lions, winning 9-0. The 6th-ranked Columbia’s men returned the favor by defeating the 7th-ranked Big Red, 7-2.
The Penn men hosted Franklin and Marshall. F&M captured the match, 5-4.
This weekend, Wesleyan hosted the second annual Division III Individual Tournament. Representatives from 12 schools participated in the event: Amherst, Bates, Bowdoin, Conn College, Hamilton, Middlebury, Mount Holyoke, MIT, Siena, Wellesley, Wesleyan, and Williams. Laila Samy (Wesleyan) defeated Nessrine Ariffin (Bates) to win the women’s A draw. The women’s B draw was captured by Ananya Mahalingam-Dhingra (Williams), who defeated Ellen Coombe (Williams). In the men’s draw, Kevin Chen (Williams) defeated Guy Davidson (Wesleyan) for the A draw title, while Nabil Saleem (Bates) defeated Caran Arora (Bates) to capture the B draw.
Coaches and Team Contacts, please remember to enter your team’s results in the US Squash Scoring System on the day of each match. Each player must be named in the results (“Not on Roster” entries will not be tolerated) or penalties may be applied.
Schools are reminded that to qualify for the National Team Championships, a minimum number of matches must be played at specific periods of the season:
- Varsity teams are required to play ten (10) matches against other CSA teams to enter team championships. At minimum, each team should have at least 6 different opponents. Varsity teams should play the majority of their matches against other varsity schools.
- Club teams are required to play eight (8) matches against other CSA teams to enter team championships. In addition, club teams must play at least four (4) matches between January 1st and February 10th. At minimum, each team should have at least five (5) different opponents.
For a regular season match to officially count for ranking purposes, each team must have at least seven players. Except for Emerging Teams, matches with less than seven players per team will not count towards the required number of matches for entry into the National Team Championships.
