Around the Courts: College Squash Highlights (11/16/2014)

College Squash AssociationNorthampton, MA — It was a busy week for college squash with play concentrated in Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, and Pennsylvania.

On Tuesday, Beantown rivals Boston College and Boston University squared off. The Eagles soared to a 7-2 victory over the Terriers.

On Thursday, Boston University visited MIT. The Engineers won, 8-1. Bucknell swept Penn State.

On Friday, Franklin & Marshall opened the season with shutouts of the Haverford men and women. The Diplomats travelled to Trinity College on Saturday to face Bowdoin. F&M shutout both Polar Bear squads.

Colby travelled to Boston on Saturday to face Northeastern, Wellesley, and MIT. The Mules defeated Wellesley, 6-3, MIT, 9-0, and the Northeastern men and women, each by a score of 9-0.

The Johns Hopkins women defeated Bucknell, 8-1, but lost to Georgetown, 4-5.

At Navy on Saturday, a milestone was set. Craig Dawson, Navy’s career leader in squash coaching victories, earned his 300th coaching victory, while the Navy program recorded its 900th victory. Navy recorded victories over Georgetown, Stanford, Denison, Hobart, and Bucknell. Hobart earned an 8-1 victory over the Stanford men, but fell to George Washington. Stanford edged the Virginia men, 5-4. UVA beat Denison and Johns Hopkins on Sunday.

On Saturday at the Wesleyan Round Robin, 27th-ranked William Smith upset 25th-ranked Mount Holyoke, 8-1. The Herons also shut out Smith College. Mount Holyoke defeated Tuts, 6-3. Both Middlebury squads opened their seasons with a 2-0 start. The Middlebury women defeated Smith College, 9-0, and Wesleyan, 8-1, while the Middlebury men defeated Conn College, 9-0, and Wesleyan, 6-3. Wesleyan earned 9-0 victories against the Tufts men and women.

On day two of the Wesleyan Round Robin, the Wesleyan women defeated William Smith, 8-1. The Cardinals faced Bates on Sunday afternoon. The Bobcat men and women each prevailed 6-3. William Smith earned their second victory of the weekend against a higher ranked opponent, this time defeating Tufts, 6-3. The Jumbos beat Smith College.

Dickinson hosted their first home match this weekend. The Red Devil men were shutout by Haverford. The women’s team came up just short in their first match as a varsity program, falling 4-5 to Haverford.

The Northwestern women opened the season with an 8-1 victory over Minnesota. The Rochester women, ranked 42nd, defeated 34th-ranked Colgate, 8-1.

Trinity opened the season by hosting Bates on Saturday. The Trinity women won 9-0, while the men won 8-1. The Bobcats rebounded by defeating Conn College. The men won 9-0, while the women won 7-2. The Bowdoin men and women also defeated the Camels.

On Sunday, the Trinity women and men each defeated Middlebury, 8-1.

The Lehigh men defeated Lafayette, 9-0.

Coaches and Team Contacts, please remember to enter your team’s results in the US Squash Scoring System on the day of each match. Each player must be named in the results (“Not on Roster” entries will not be tolerated) or penalties may be applied.

Schools are reminded that to qualify for the National Team Championships, a minimum number of matches must be played at specific periods of the season:

  • Varsity teams are required to play ten (10) matches against other CSA teams to enter team championships. At minimum, each team should have at least 6 different opponents. Varsity teams should play the majority of their matches against other varsity schools.
  • Club teams are required to play eight (8) matches against other CSA teams to enter team championships. In addition, club teams must play at least four (4) matches between January 1st and February 10th. At minimum, each team should have at least five (5) different opponents.
  • Unless a petition for an exemption is made to the Tournament Director, teams must submit and bring at least 9 players to Team Championships.

For a regular season match to officially count for ranking purposes, each team must have at least seven players. Except for Emerging Teams, matches with less than seven players per team will not count towards the required number of matches for entry into the National Team Championships.
