Northampton, MA — The 2014 – 2015 college squash season has begun! Over the past few weekends, a select few matches were played.
On October 18th, World Squash Day, the Penn State and Lehigh men kicked off the season at Drexel University. The match coincided with the finals of the US Squash Open. Lehigh emerged with a 6-2 victory.
On the same day, Penn State and Ithaca both defeated Siena.
Meanwhile in Virginia, UVA hosted a number of teams. The Cavaliers’ men went 3-0 on the day with victories over Duke, Georgetown, and Richmond. Georgetown defeated Richmond and Duke. The Spiders defeated the Blue Devils.
On October 25th, the Stanford men opened their season. The Cardinal shutout Oregon and Cal. On the East Coast, the Virginia women opened their season with a 7-0 victory over Georgetown.
The Virginia women traveled to Boston on November 2nd. They joined BC, Mount Holyoke, Smith, and Wellesley for a round robin at Harvard. The Cavaliers went 4-0 on the weekend with victories over Boston College, 9-0, Wellesley, 8-1, Mount Holyoke, 9-0, and Smith College, 9-0. Wellesley defeated Mount Holyoke, 7-2, and Smith, 9-0. Mount Holyoke was victorious over BC, 6-3. The Eagles defeated Smith, 8-1.
At Northeastern, the Bryant men lost to Northeastern, 3-6, but defeated Boston College, 5-4. The Bulldogs also defeated Vermont, 7-0. BC defeated Vermont and Siena.
Lehigh won its second match of the season by defeating Swarthmore, 6-3.
In the Midwest, Notre Dame hosted Northwestern. The Wildcats defeated the Irish, 8-1.
On Friday, George Washington opened play against Georgetown. Both of the Colonials’ squads won, 9-0. Also on Friday, Boston College visited Wellesley. The Blue defeated the Eagles, 6-3.
The Naval Academy hosted its round robin this weekend. The Midshipmen went 6-0, with victories over Fordham, Siena, Dickinson, Minnesota, Johns Hopkins, and Boston University. Dickinson College won its first match as a varsity squad by beating Siena, 6-2. Washington edged the Minnesota men, 5-4.
The Johns Hopkins women traveled to Colgate on Saturday. JHU swept the Raiders, 7-0.
Making their return from a season without squash, the Vassar women opened the year with victories over Haverford and NYU. The Haverford women defeated NYU, 6-1. After defeating Vassar and NYU, the Haverford men opened the season 2-0.
William Smith shutout Rochester, 9-0.
The Ivy League Scrimmages, a preseason event at Yale, were held this weekend. In the unofficial action, Penn won the women’s tournament, while Yale won the men’s tournament.
Coaches and Team Contacts, please remember to enter your team’s results in the US Squash Scoring System on the day of each match. Each player must be named in the results (“Not on Roster” entries will not be tolerated) or penalties may be applied.
Schools are reminded that to qualify for the National Team Championships, a minimum number of matches must be played at specific periods of the season:
- Varsity teams are required to play ten (10) matches against other CSA teams to enter team championships. At minimum, each team should have at least 6 different opponents. Varsity teams should play the majority of their matches against other varsity schools.
- Club teams are required to play eight (8) matches against other CSA teams to enter team championships. In addition, club teams must play at least four (4) matches between January 1st and February 10th. At minimum, each team should have at least five (5) different opponents.
- Unless a petition for an exemption is made to the Tournament Director, teams must submit and bring at least 9 players to Team Championships.
For a regular season match to officially count for ranking purposes, each team must have at least seven players. Except for Emerging Teams, matches with less than seven players per team will not count towards the required number of matches for entry into the National Team Championships.
