Northampton, MA — For the week ending 2/2/2014, Penn’s Anaka Alankamony and Franklin & Marshall’s Mauricio Sedano have been named the women’s and men’s [hpow].
A [hpow] should have a significant impact on his or her team’s performance during the prior week and demonstrate sportsmanship. Coaches and Sports Information Directors may nominate players.
Anaka Alankamony (University of Pennsylvania): Penn first-year player Anaka Alankamony helped her team earn two critical victories in the race towards the Howe Cup. Against Princeton on Wednesday, she defeated Princeton’s top player, Maria Elena Ubina, to help guide the Quakers to a 6-3 victory. With the team match with Yale tied at 4-4 on Sunday, Alankamony came back from a 1-2 deficit against the Bulldogs’ Millie Tomlinson to win in five games (14-12, 11-13, 5-11, 11-9, and 11-8).
Mauricio Sedano (Franklin & Marshall College): F&M had quite the road trip this past weekend. They played three top-eight teams: Cornell, St. Lawrence, and Rochester. At the #4 position, Sedano, a senior, played #4 on the Diplomats’ ladder. He went 3-0 on the weekend against Kevin Flannery (Cornell), Vir Seth (St. Lawrence), and William Mohr (Rochester), which helped F&M go 2-1 on the weekend. The two victories included a 6-3 win over higher ranked Rochester.
