Remembering Herb Bunker, College Squash Association Lifetime Achievement Recepient

Lewiston, ME — On Sunday, Herb Bunker, a recipient of the Women’s College Squash Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award, passed away.

The Women’s College Squash Association has only presented the Lifetime Achievement Award three times.  It is presented to those rare individuals who have contributed during their career to college squash as a whole and who have dedicated a career to the sport. Bunker received the award in 2001.

In his many roles in college squash, Bunker coached at Bates College. He helped establish the program in the mid-1980s with George Wigton, a member of the Men’s College Squash Hall of Fame. He served as assistant coach for years, but was head coach for a number of seasons in the early 1990s. He guided the men for one season (1989 – 1990) and guided them to a 7 – 14 record. He coached the women for five seasons (1989 -1992 and 1994 – 1996). He had a 45 – 65 record with the women.

Bunker served numerous roles on the Women’s College Squash Association’s Executive Committee. He also was the Executive Director for the CSA.

According to Bates coach Pat Cosquer, “Herb loved squash dearly and would stop by my office often up until his last months to chat about all things college squash. He will be missed and will continue to be with us all in everything we do with our teams and our sport.”

“The CSA owes a lot to Herb Bunker. He helped provide the Women’s College Squash Association with a strong foundation for our organization. He helped develop some key elements to guide us on our way to a more professional and polished organization,” Gail Ramsay, the women’s coach at Princeton told the College Squash Association. “He was a thoughtful and generous man with his time and was passionate about the game of squash and coaching. He will be missed.”
