Northampton, MA — Although there were fewer matches this week as teams begin holiday breaks, there were some quality college squash match ups.
On Wednesday, 17th-ranked Mount Holyoke traveled to 18th-ranked Wesleyan. The Lyons had not lost to the Cardinals since the 2001 – 2002 season. On its home courts, Wesleyan reversed that trend and won the match, 7-2. They also defeated Conn College 8-1 on Friday. With a 9-2 record going into the semester break, the Wesleyan women are off to their best start since the 1996-1997 season.
On Friday, the Wesleyan men hosted Conn College. Since 2004, the two schools have split their last 20 contests, 10-10. Wesleyan won the match 7-2.
Conn College faced Vasar on Saturday. Both Camel squads prevailed. The women won 7-2, while the men won 9-0.
Amherst College hosted nearby Smith College on Wednesday. The Jeffs prevailed, 9-0. On Saturday, Amherst travelled to Boston. Both squads defeated Northeastern, 9-0. The Jeffs’ men also defeated MIT, 9-0.
Harvard hosted Williams on Wednesday. Both Crimson teams blanked the Ephs, 9-0.
Thursday featured the Naval Academy’s visit to Penn. The Quakers defended their home courts with an 8-1 victory. The following day, the Midshipmen continued their visit to Philadelphia by visiting Drexel. They returned to Annapolis with a 7-2 win over the Dragons.
On Saturday, the Haverford men shutout Swarthmore.
Rochester, the 5th-ranked team in the nation, had a challenging road trip this week. The Yellowjackets began play at 7th-ranked Franklin & Marshall. Despite sweeping the 7, 8, and 9 positions, Franklin & Marshall lost 3-6. Rochester continued on to top-ranked Princeton for a match on Saturday. The match featured numerous close games and matches, including three five-game matches. Ultimately, the Tigers swatted the Yellowjackets, 7-2.
Coaches and Team Contacts, please remember to enter your team’s results in the US Squash Scoring System on the day of each match. Each player must be named in the results (“Not on Roster” entries will not be tolerated) or penalties may be applied.
Schools are reminded that to qualify for the National Team Championships, a minimum number of matches must be played at specific periods of the season:
- Varsity teams are required to play ten (10) matches against other CSA teams to enter team championships. At minimum, each team should have at least 6 different opponents. Varsity teams should play the majority of their matches against other varsity schools.
- Club teams are required to play eight (8) matches against other CSA teams to enter team championships. In addition, club teams must play at least four (4) matches between January 1st and February 10th. At minimum, each team should have at least five (5) different opponents.
