George Washington: 2012 – 2013 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

Washington, DC — The George Washington Colonials may be the defending Summers Cup champions, but they have no intention of resting on their laurels. “We don’t take any team for granted this coming season given our tough schedule,” says head coach Wendy Lawrence. “Every match will be tough as we take on a lot of talented and highly ranked teams this year.” The Colonials will be aiming for the B Division, and they plan to focus on strength and conditioning to help them make the jump. The team’s four new recruits will play a significant role as well. They include Ahmed Abdel-Latif, a highly ranked high school player who came to Mercersburg Academy from Cairo; James Reiss, a native of Fairfield, CT, who brings substantial tournament experience; Reid Breck, who helped lead the Brunswick School to the New England Interscholastic Squash Association Championship; and Browning Platt, who played number 1 for St. Paul’s. The team will be traveling to the Cayman Islands for a training trip over winter break, and in April they are planning to run a PSA event to raise funds for urban squash programs and juvenile diabetes. “Without question, we have assembled a very talented group of athletes over the past several years to where we now have a very solid core of players from top to bottom,” says Lawrence. “They are committed to each other as teammates and classmates and they are excited to be a part of a thriving program.”
