Squash Tournament Held at Colgate

Navy coach Craig Dawson reports on the squash tournament held at Colgate University.

Annapolis, MD —  The squash tournament held at Colgate on February 6th and 7th was a huge success. Men’s teams participating were Bucknell, Colgate, Lafayette, Lehigh, and Navy. Colgate as the host school could not have done a better job in organizing the event. Janet Little, Colgate’s club sports administrator, had the five courts in immaculate condition and provided everything from score sheets to medical services.

The tournament was played as a round robin with every school playing four matches over a two- day period. The final standings were:
  • Navy 4-0
  • Colgate 3-1
  • Lafayette 2-2
  • Bucknell 1-3
  • Lehigh 0-4

The opening match between Colgate and Lehigh featured a boisterous home crowd giving immediate excitement to the tournament. The closest match was Bucknell’s 5-4 victory over Lehigh, with Bucknell winning two matches by coming from behind 0-2.

All of the players enjoyed the competition. Lafayette, Lehigh, and Bucknell had to leave their schools Saturday in a blizzard to make the trip. The tournament was an opportunity for Navy’s varsity team to see what club teams must do to compete. Colgate has a well-supported club program with five beautiful ASB international courts. Lafayette’s program is taking off, building on their success at Nationals last year and receiving monetary support from their school. Bucknell has the potential to build both a men’s and a women’s team with four women playing on the men’s team. Finally Lehigh has a very motivated captain, Esteban Caro, who has worked hard to organize his new team and be recognized by his school.
