2016 National Team Championships (Weekend 1): Day 2 Morning Report

New Haven, CT — The morning saw action in the women’s E Division and the men’s C, D, and E consolations and H quarterfinals.

Women’s C Division – E Division

Women’s C Division (Walker Cup): The C Division semifinals are currently underway.

Women’s D Division (Epps Cup): The Epps Cup semifinals are scheduled for 5 pm.

Women’s E Division: The first E Division matches, played in the late evening on Friday, set the stage for this morning’s action. Last night, Washington University in St. Louis swept Smith College, 9-0. Boston University advanced with a win over NYU, Rochester defeated Minnesota, and Northeastern knocked off Fordham. In main draw action on Saturday morning, Georgetown, who had a first round bye, opened the tournament with a 9-0 win over BU. In the consolations, which started play bright and early on Saturday, Minnesota defeated Fordham, 6-3, and Smith beat NYU, 6-3. Smith and Minnesota will play in tomorrow’s first round consolation finals, while Fordham and NYU will play for 43rd.

Men’s C Division – H Division

Men’s C Division (Summers Cup): Amherst opened up a 2-1 lead over Bowdoin after the first flight of matches, but Bowdoin made up ground in the second flight. With one match left to play on court, the contest was tied 4-4 between the two NESCAC foes.  The deciding match at #4 ended up going to five games, and Amherst ended up edging out the Polar Bears, 5-4. The other C Division consolation semifinal — Hobart versus Colby — was competitive up-and-down the ladder with multiple matches going past three games. Colby was able to clinch before the end of the third flight of matches. They’ll face Amherst tomorrow in the C consolation final.

Men’s D Division (Conroy Cup): Hamilton clinched early in the consolation semifinal against Johns Hopkins, and MIT defeated Bucknell, 7-2. Hamilton and MIT will face each other in Sunday’s consolation final, and Johns Hopkins and Bucknell will square off for 31st in the nation.

Men’s E Division: (Chaffee Cup): Georgetown swept Lehigh in the E consolations, though many of the games and individual matches were competitive. Chicago pulled out a hard fought win over Fordham in the other E consolation semifinal. With all but two matches going past three games, Chicago took the 5-4 win.

Men’s F Division (Serues Cup): The first F Division semifinal is scheduled for 2:30 pm.

Men’s G Division (Hawthorn Cup): Both Hawthorn Cup semifinals are due on court at 5 pm.

Men’s H Division: The H Division was the last cup to finish its first round, due in part to travel considerations. Two H Division matches went off late Friday evening, and West Coast squads dominated: USC swept Lafayette, and Cal Berkeley outlasted UNC, 6-3. This morning, Vanderbilt jumped out to an early lead against Siena and clinched by the end of the second round, wrapping up first round action.
