New Haven, CT — This evening’s matches featured the women’s D and E Divisions and the men’s E, F, G, and H Divisions.
Women’s C Division – E Division
Women’s C Division (Walker Cup): Amherst and Bates will play for the Walker Cup at 11 am tomorrow.
Women’s D Division (Epps Cup): Top-seeded Dickinson, last year’s E Division winners, will have a chance at the Epps Cup tomorrow. Dickinson kept the Connecticut College Camels at just enough distance throughout the match to sew up a spot in the finals. Three matches went to five games, and Dickinson came out ahead in two of them. The final score was Dickinson 6, Conn 3. In tomorrow’s final the Red Devils will play Wesleyan, who held off William Smith, a team with a history of semifinal heroics. Wesleyan and William Smith traded matches up and down the ladder, but the Cardinals’ wins in the middle of the order helped make the difference. Tomorrow’s 2 pm final will be the first-ever meeting between Wesleyan and Dickinson. In the consolation semifinals, Mount Holyoke defeated Haverford, 8-1, and Vassar won the last match on court to defeat Boston College, 5-4.
Women’s E Division: Coming into the tournament, Bucknell was ranked just behind Johns Hopkins, and the two teams met in the E Division semifinals. The Bison dominated the lower six matches, winning them all in three games. The top three matches were closely contested, with Bucknell winning #3 in tie-breakers in the fifth and the other two contests going to the Blue Jays in four. Bucknell leapfrogged Johns Hopkins with the 6-3 win. The Bison will play Georgetown for the E Division title tomorrow. The two teams have not yet played each other this season. In the plate, BU edged out Colgate, 5-4, and Northeastern topped Rochester, 7-2.
Men’s C Division – H Division
Men’s C Division (Summers Cup): Bates will play Williams in the Summers Cup final tomorrow. The final is scheduled for 2 pm.
Men’s D Division (Conroy Cup): Western Ontario and Dickinson will play for the Conroy Cup tomorrow at 11 am.
Men’s E Division: (Chaffee Cup): Tufts and New York University squared off in the second E Division semifinal. The Jumbos needed just two flights to punch their ticket to the Chaffee Cup final. NYU claimed the top two matches, but Tufts controlled everything from number 3 down. Tufts will face Connecticut College in tomorrow’s final. The two teams played at the end of the first semester, and Tufts won that December meeting, 8-1. Two months later, the two schools played during the NESCAC championship, and Conn won 5-4. Tomorrow’s match may go down to the wire.
Men’s F Division (Serues Cup): No matter the outcome of tomorrow’s F Division final, the Serues Cup is headed to Boston. Northeastern University advanced late in the afternoon with an 8-1 win over the University of Miami. The Hurricanes took a match in the first flight and pushed four other matches to four or five games, but Northeastern was still able to lock down the victory before the third flight was on court. Northeastern will face Boston University in the final, who advanced earlier in the day.
Men’s G Division (Hawthorn Cup): Top-seeded Northwestern turned in a strong performance in their semifinal victory over Washington University in St. Louis. The Huskies won all but three matches in three games. Colgate, seeded second, also advanced to the final in convincing fashion, defeating Penn State. The Nittany Lions won one match and took two others past three games, but the Raiders were in control. Northwestern and Colgate will play for the Hawthorn Cup tomorrow at 9 am; this will be the first meeting between the two teams this season. In the consolation semifinals, Davidson and Vassar have clinched against Swarthmore and Notre Dame, respectively.
Men’s H Division: In each flight of the Vanderbilt-University of Southern California match, the Commodores won two matches and the Trojans won one. In the end, Vanderbilt advanced to the G Division final with a 6-3 win. The Commodores will face Duke at 9 am tomorrow in the H Division final. In the consolation semifinals, Lafayette outlasted Siena, 5-4; the Leopards will play UNC tomorrow in the consolation final.
